Broadcasting of Azaan on loud speakers
Seeking Fatwa regarding the broadcasting of Azaan etc. from the loud speakers of mosques and the disturbance of neighbors.

In the Holy presence of Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpayegani (May his blessings be everlasting)

With respect and salutation;

What is the rule of the Holy Shari’ah regarding the broadcasting of Azaan, supplications, Qur’anic verses etc. from the loud speakers of the mosques, while it may cause disturbance for the neighbors?

Thanking you,

A group of believers.

In the name of Allah, the beneficent and merciful.

Alaikum as Salaam wa Rahmatullah

I would recommend the people who conduct programs in the mosques, Hussaini centers and other religious places, to broadcast only such voices from the loud speakers which hold the status of a slogan, and apart from these cases, they should be careful that it must not cause disturbance for the people, and it must not give an excuse to the ones who seek excuse to question the purpose of conducting all these programs, and specially, the condition of the sick and old age people should be regarded.

          Moreover, I would recommend and advice all those people who have their complaints against the loud speakers of the mosques and the religious programs that they should not become one among those regarding whom the Almighty Allah has said: “And when Allah is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but when those (worshipped) other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice”; that they feel a kind of aversion and saddening when the Azaan, Qur’anic verses, preaching and the lamentation of the Holy Progeny (a.s.) is broadcasted from the loud speakers, but when music, songs and melodies are broadcasted, they do not object or complain against it.

They should strive to become a part of such groups which, like the Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon our Prophet, his progeny, and him), as per some narratives, when he heard the Holy text ‘Sub’boohun Quddoos Rabbul Malaa’ekati war Rooh’, he requested the speaker to recite it once again and he would grant him few of his sheep in return. The person repeated its recitation so many times that the Prophet gifted him with all his sheep and at the end, requested him to accept himself as his slave in exchange of reciting the text one more time.

May the Almighty Allah, grant us all with success in performing our religious duties.
