Merits and Nobility of the Holy Month of Ramadan

Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) told Jabir Ibne Abdullah Ansari: O Jabir! This is the month of Ramadan. One who fasts in this month, prays in a part of the night, keeps his stomach and private organs from Haram, protects his tongue from useless talks, will come out of the sins just as the month of Ramadan proceeds.

Jabir said: O Messenger of Allah! What a beautiful tradition this is!

Then the holy Prophet (s.a.) replied, “O Jabir, how difficult it is to act upon these conditions!”

In another tradition:

Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: “The month of Ramadan is a month whose fasts Allah has made obligatory upon you. Whoever fasts in this month with belief and for seeking its rewards, he will come out of his sins like the day his mother gave him birth.”

Merits of the Holy Month of Ramadan

In the Sermon of Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w.s.)

Sheikh Sadooq (r.a.) has related through reliable chain of narrators from Imam Reda (a.s.) and he narrates from his respected ancestors, who narrate from Amirul Momineen (a.s.) that he said: “One day, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said in a sermon:

“O people! The month of Ramadan is coming with forgiveness and blessings towards you. This is the month which is the best of all months in the eyes of Allah. Its days are best among the days. Its nights are best among the nights. Its hours are best among the hours. This is the month in which you have been invited as a guest of Allah. You have been included among the people of grace. Every breath you take in this month has the reward of Tasbeeh (glorification of Allah), your sleep is worship and your good deeds are rewarded and your invocations are accepted. Therefore, you must invoke your Lord right earnest with hearts that are free from sin and evil, and pray that Allah may bless you to keep fasts, and to recite the Holy Quran.

Verily! The person who does not receive the mercy and benevolence of Allah in this month, is very unfortunate. While fasting, remember the hunger and thirst of tomorrow in Qiyamat (Day of Judgment). Give alms to the poor and needy. Pay respect to elders. Have sympathy to youngsters and be kind towards your relatives and kinsmen. Guard your tongue against unworthy words, and your eyes from sins that are not worth seeing (forbidden) and your ears from sound that should not be heard.

Be kind to orphans so that when your children become orphans, they will also be treated with kindness. Do invoke that Allah may forgive your sins. Do raise your hands at the time of Prayers, as it is the best time for asking for His mercy. When we invoke at such times, we are answered by Him. When we call Him, He responds and when we ask for anything, the Prayer is accepted by Him.

O those whose lives are pawned to their deeds by their own hands. Free them by invoking Allah for forgiveness. If your back is under the load of sins, prostrate yourself before Him for long and make it lighter. Do understand fully well that Allah has promised in the name of His Majesty and Honour that He will not take to task such people who fast and offer prayer in this month, and perform Sajdah and that He will not burn them in the fire of Hell on the day of Judgement.

O people! If anybody amongst you arranges for Iftar (food for ending of fast at sunset) of any believer, Allah will give him reward as if he has set free a slave. He will forgive his minor sins.

Some companions asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! Not all of us have the means to do so”. The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) told them, “Keep yourself away from the fire of Hell, by inviting a believer for Iftar, though it may consist of half a date or simply with water, if you have nothing else.”

O people! Anybody who is in this month may cultivate good manners, will walk over the Sirat (brigde) of the Hereafter and his feet will be firm while all the feet would be slipping.

Anyone who takes light work from his servant (male and female) in this month, Allah will make easy his accounting on the Day of Judgement. Anybody who does not annoy others in this month, Allah will keep him safe from His wrath in Qiyamat. Anybody who respects and treats an orphan with kindness in this month, Allah shall look at him with kindness in Qiyamat.

Anybody who treats well his kinsmen in this month, Allah will bestow His mercy on him in Qiyamat, while anybody who maltreats his kinsmen in this month, Allah will keep him away from His mercy.

Whoever offers recommended (Sunnat) prayers in this month, Allah will save him from Hell. In this month, whoever offers one obligatory prayer, the angels will write for him the rewards of seventy such prayers that were offered by him in any other month.

Whoever recites repeatedly Salawat on me, Allah will keep the scales of his deeds heavy, when in Qiyamat the scales of others will be tending to lightness. Whosoever recites in this month only one verse of Quran, he will be rewarded in manner as if he had recited the full Quran at other times.

O people! Remember, the gates of Paradise open in this month. Do pray that the gates may not be closed for you. And the gates of Hell are closed, so pray that these gates may never be opened. The Satans are imprisoned in this month, so pray that they are never ever able to mislead you.

AmirulMomineen (a.s.) said: “I stood up and asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! What is the best deed in this month?” He said, “O Abal Hasan! The best of all deeds in this month is to keep oneself from that which Allah has made Haram.

Then Allah’s Messenger (p.b.u.h.) wept. I said: “O Allah’s Messenger! What has made you weep?” He said, “I weep for all that will befall in this month upon you. I can foresee you offering prayer for your Lord while the cruellest of all the predecessors and successors has risen to strike on your head, such that your beard has covered with blood. Then I asked: “Will this help in saving my religion?” He said: “It will help in saving your religion!” Then he added: “O Ali! Whoever murders you, has murdered me; whoever envies you, has envied me; this is because you are for me like my soul is to me. Your nature is from my nature; and you are my successor and my vicegerent upon my nation!

The Important Responsibilities of those Awaiting the Arrival.

An article by His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the subject of Mahdaviyat.

In the name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) said:

وَ لَقَدْ كَتَبْنا فِی الزَّبورِ مِنْ بَعْدِ الذِّكْرِ أَنَّ الْارْضَ یرِثُها عِبادِی الصّالِحُونَ[1]

The glorious program of honoring the great Eid of 15th Shaban, the birth anniversary of the only deliverer of the world, one whose arrival was promised by the Prophets and Apostles, the Master of time and the peaceful refuge, His Eminence, the Remainder of Allah (s.w.t.) – may the souls of all the worlds be sacrificed for him – is an absolutely holy and precious opportunity for all the Shias and devotees of this divine Guardian. It is a great opportunity to attain the honor of participating in the glorious commemoration of this honorable day of birth and the sacred day of Allah, and to attend the spiritual and devotional sessions, enlightening gatherings and the joyful and merry programs, the state of spiritual connection with His Holiness and the level of accordance and agreement of etiquettes, actions, individual behavior, social, cultural, economic and political circumstances with the expectations which Allah’s chosen one has from his Shias and devotees.

Only that individual or society is prosperous which is successful in the reckoning and attainment of His Eminence’s satisfaction.

On this occasion, in order to attain the honor of participating in this ceremony associated with the Awaited Imam, His Eminence, the Master of Time (may Allah hasten his reappearance and relief), and attention towards the realities and meanings of awaiting the reappearance, I would like to present a few words before my brothers and sisters in faith.

I hope that the light of its meanings, which is luminescent through the candle of the Holy Quran and the noble narrations, increases the brightness of the hearts of the faithful men and women.

Dearest readers, you are the ones who attain the pride of participating in these joyous events every year and you depict your devotion and love for the sacred threshold of His Eminence by decorating the markets, lighting the streets, mosques, Hussaini centers, organizing programs of orations, presenting the virtues and greatness of his holiness, reciting poetries and elegies for him; and by hospitality and serving food and sharing felicitations, you increase your own spiritual and faithful energy as well as the energy of others, and feel proud of being a Shia, and weep upon the long duration of distance and separation, and shed tears, and invoke His Holiness by crying “O son of Hasan! O son of Hasan!”

Peace and blessings of Allah (s.w.t.) be upon you all! I congratulate you for the enthusiasm, the desire, the awareness, the emotions, the understanding and cognition, and this journey towards the heaven of devotion.

You must be grateful to Allah (s.w.t.) for He has filled your hearts with the cognition of the Imam of Time (may Allah hasten his reappearance) and has delivered you from the death of ignorance, and has guided you towards the final destination of truth, faith and cognition of the ultimate argument of the time and the divine word.

Always focus on the duties which are made obligatory upon every faithful man and woman who anticipates the promised reappearance and the promised day, and exert all your efforts in performing these duties.

The age of occultation, is the age of examination and assessment, the age of struggle and brevity. Those fortunate people and the believers who are steadfast in their faith, and who have reformed themselves in this reformative school of occultation, are not shaken by the various incidents, pressures and difficulties that come across them in their lives, and their faith remains intact just like a mountain that remains unmoved, established and steadfast in front of strong winds, and thus they become different from the individuals with weak belief and low will-power.

How much ever the attachment with religion and religiousness becomes difficult and mixed with a variety of apparent deprivations, their faith and commitment becomes stronger to the same extent, and the truth and rightness of the narrations regarding the incidents of the time of occultation becomes more evident for them by the spreading of sins, music, unlawful activities, by the condition of some young men and women, by the mixed gatherings of men and women, and other such incidences that have been reported in the traditions.

In those conditions when as per some narrations, the safeguarding of religion will become as difficult and tough as protecting fire in the palm, or as mentioned in other tradition:

انَّ لِصاحِبِ هذَا الْامْرِ غَیبَةً الْمُتَمَسِّكُ فیها بِدینِهِ كَالْخارِطِ لِلْقِتادِ

For the Master of this Affair (Imam Mahdi), there will be such an occultation in which one who associates himself with his religion will be like someone who tries to protect a thorny tree with his hands”.

In this age of occultation, the steadfast believers will earn the reward of those men who fought with their swords in the company of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him and his progeny) and their status is so lofty that Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) has regarded them as his brothers and as per narrations, he has also expressed the desire to meet them.

The believers in occultation and the Army of Allah, are the true anticipators of the reappearance and the universal government of Islam, regarding which is has arrived in the noble traditions that:

اولئِكَ هُمُ الْمُخْلَصُونَ حَقّاً وَ شیعَتُنا صِدْقاً وَ الدُّعاةُ الی دینِ اللهِ وَ جَهْراً اولئِكَ الَّذینَ یؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَیبِ ثُمَّ اولئِكَ حِزْبُ اللهِ الا انَّ حِزْبَ اللهِ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

“They are indeed the truly dedicated servants and our truthful Shias, the inviters towards the religion of Allah, both secretly and in open, they are the ones who believe in the unseen, and they are Allah’s confederates. Look! The confederates of Allah are indeed felicitous!”

According to the noble narration: One who awaits our affair is like someone who is covered in his blood in the path of Allah.

These are all the virtues of you Shias, men and women, the anticipators, the committed people, ones who are obligated towards the commands and loyal towards the Imam of Time (peace be upon him). Beware and safeguard all these virtues.

The human rights and the rights of every men and women are the same as ascertained by the God of mankind, by the creator of men and women; it is different from the series of misguidance, deviance, corruption, destruction and journey towards an animalistic life. Every man and woman, young and old, who does not accept any of the divine commands, or because it is against the unethical culture of the west, he does not consider it appropriate for today’s circumstances, his faith will be destroyed and indications towards this has been made in the traditions that: at the time of occultation, a believer will rise in the morning with the state of belief and by the arrival of night, he will exit from the religion”.

According to narrations, the age of occultation will stretch to such an extent that Master of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:

ما اطْوَلَ هذَا الْعِناءِ وَ ابْعَدَ هذَا الرَّجاءِ

How long is the duration of sorrow and how distant is this hope.

In the path of fundamental changes and drastic alterations, human beings experience different schools of thought and systems and find each one of them lacking the necessary conditions to insure the common success of humanity and incapable of establishing justice and fairness, and how much ever the world fills with oppression, tyranny, corruption, danger and destruction, then by the law of “when something crosses its limits, it depicts the antagonistic nature”, the human societies will become prepared for establishing that divine Islamic system and the governance of justice throughout the world and with the reappearance of His Eminence, the world will reach the point of excellence and touch the peak of ascension.

O lovers of the Master and anticipators of his reappearance! The age of occultation is an age of action, enduring responsibilities, performing duties, and an age of resistance, movement, steadfastness, forbearance and endurance in the affair of religion.

With respect to honoring the divine sacraments, raising the word of Allah, propagating Islam, with availing the causes of political, economic and cultural independence, freedom from attachment with the infidels, with the development of knowledge, industries, the progress and propagation of education and training, the command of good deeds, prohibition of bad deeds, cooperation in piety and Godwariness, helping the weak and downtrodden, fulfilling the needs of the needy, aiding the impoverished, defending the borders and geographical walls of the Islamic nation as well as the boundaries of intellect and belief, removing the heresies, confronting the men of doubts and skepticisms, fighting the bases of corruption and unlawful activities, breaching the sanctity of divine commands, in all these cases, we all are responsible and all the Muslims are committed, and it is you and all the Shias and anticipators of the reappearance who must strive and put effort to attain the goals of Islam.

You must recognize the dangers that threaten the Islamic societies and have to a great extent, pushed several societies towards the valley of weakness and lowliness, towards obedience of the infidels, and must not allow our society and our beloved new generation to be entangled by it. The age of occultation is an age of duty, an age of initiative, actions and an age of hope for the future and the victory of truth over evil. Await and act, as Allah (s.w.t.) has said: [2] وَ قُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَیری اللهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَ رَسُولُهُ وَ الْمُؤْمِنونَ‏

Husain (peace be upon him) – the Master of all virtues. (A writing of His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the occasion of the birthday of the Master of Martyrs, Imam Husain, peace be upon him).

Husain (peace be upon him) – the Master of all virtues. (A writing of His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the occasion of the birthday of the Master of Martyrs, Imam Husain, peace be upon him).
Husain (peace be upon him) - The Master of all virtues. (On the occasion of the birthday of Imam Husain, peace be upon him).

Although the unparalleled sacrifice, perseverance, truth-worship, trust, will-power, disregard of the deceiving beauties and luxuries of this world, breaking of associations and worldly attachments, expressed in the tragic incident of Karbala have manifested the existence of Imam Husain (peace be upon him) and attracted the hearts towards him to such an extent that less attention is paid towards other virtues of his holiness.

It is as though the social thoughts and human intellects consider a person who depicts sacrifice and selflessness in the path of supporting the truth, as someone who possesses all the greatness and virtues, and how much ever the level of sacrifice rises and gets purified, the greatness of one’s personality in the hearts of people increases.

The unparalleled sacrifice of Imam Husain (peace be upon him) has elevated his status so high that in every field of comparison and competition, he can compete with every man with great ethical and moral values through this single virtue only.

It is true that the depiction of such persistence, bravery, fortitude and magnanimity is not possible by anyone but who is outstanding and prominent in other ethical values and etiquettes also. Faith and wisdom, certainty and insight, trust and reliance on Allah (s.w.t.), piety and endurance, must all be present at the highest level in a person so that he can become the manifestation of such astonishing and magnanimous signs and the epitome of abstinence, forbearance and steadfastness.

However, it is not easy to indicate towards the virtues and excellence of such a great personality but for the sake of blessings, we will briefly indicate towards some of the ethical values of His Holiness:

Candle of Knowledge

How much more we focus on the life of the Master of Martyrs (peace be upon him), this secret becomes even more apparent for us that in the case of religion, a miraculous insight and an unseen vision has guided His Holiness throughout the path.

The knowledge and wisdom of His Holiness becomes apparent through the debates and arguments he has had with the enemies of the holy Household, specifically Muawiyah and Marwan, through the letters he wrote to Muawiyah, through the sermons he delivered on different occasions and through the supplication of Arafa, and other supplications which are narrated from His Holiness in the books of both Shias and Sunnis.

Ibn e Kathir has written in his book Al-Bidayah wan Nihaya: Husain (peace be upon him) and Ibn e Zubair left for Mecca and took shelter in the holy city. Husain (peace be upon him) became the centre of attention for the people of Mecca. They used to visit him, sit near him and listen to his words and speeches, and benefitted from what they heard from him. They used to record his words in their memory and wrote them down so that they can narrate them for others.[1]

Alaili has written in his book Sumuw Al-Ma’na: People were so devoted and attracted to the spirituality and greatness of Imam Husain’s (peace be upon him) soul and Imam Husain (peace be upon him) was loved by them so much that they used to leave all their works and quit all their engagements to come hastily towards him. There was none other than Husain (peace be upon him) who had so many devotees and lovers; as though people witnessed a different reality of divinity and spirituality in him. When Husain (peace be upon him) used to speak, it felt that a tongue that knows the unseen is speaking, and giving them awareness about the secrets and hidden realities of the world and when he became silent, his silence made them aware of realities and truth in a different manner; because a portion of realities cannot be made apparent but with deep silence; like the dots and gaps which are placed between words, sentences and phrases, and those mere dots, like the words written on a book, give such meanings which cannot be understood without those dots even with the help of any other word or writing.[2]

The abovementioned incidents clearly depict an undeniable truth about the extent to which Imam Husain (peace be upon him) is loved by the people. Even though people where under extreme pressure by the government and their actions were supervised by the spies and agents of the government who kept an eye on them everywhere so that no one can maintain contacts with Imam Husain (peace be upon him), but is it possible to disconnect people from themselves, from their hearts and conscience by using force or dominating through powerful means? Power, to whichever extent it might be, cannot dominate over the human understanding and forces, how much ever influence they might have, cannot influence the inner-self and spirituality of human beings.

The reports that have been narrated from Imam Husain (peace be upon him) convey his knowledge and elegance, his intelligence, potential and inborn disposition, and the strength of his speech. Such narrations are more than what one can reckon. In the case of knowledge-related affairs, he used such intelligence and wisdom and answered with such ability that left people astonished to such an extent that Abdullah bin Umar said about him: “He is filled with knowledge”.[3]

Just like a hen feeds its chicks with its beak, similarly Imam Husain (peace be upon him) had received knowledge in the house of Apostleship and Guardianship directly from the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) and wisdom from the chest of Islamic teachings.

From Humility to Dignity

How much ever the understanding, divine cognition, monotheism, knowledge and wisdom of a man increases, his humility and humbleness increases simultaneously. The arrogance of a person is rooted in his ignorance, unawareness, negligence and selfishness. In the holy verses and narrations, arrogance is immensely denounced whereas humbleness and humility is highly praised.

Imam Husain (peace be upon him) was highly respected among the people. When he and his brother Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (peace be upon them) went for Hajj on their feet, all the men and senior companions of holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) descended their rides and walked with them as a sign of honor towards them. Imam Husain (peace be upon him) was not respected by the people because he had a lavish palace or owned expensive rides, or his servants and soldiers walked in front of his ride, or that the mosque of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him and his progeny) was made empty for him and the roads were blocked at the time of his arrival and departure. No! It wasn’t for any of these reasons.

Imam Husain (peace be upon him) used to live among the people and never accepted separation from them. His life was filled with simplicity. He used to walk for the holy pilgrimage every year, sat with the common people and visited their houses frequently. He used to interact with the poor, attend the congregational prayers, visit the sick, went for the funeral rites of the people and conversed with his friends and companions inside his grandfather’s mosque. He used to accept the invitation of the poor and invited them to his house as guests. He himself carried food and bread for the needy, the downtrodden, the widows and the orphans.

Soul of Servitude

Ibn Abdul Barr and Ibn Atheer narrate from Mus’ab Al-Zubairi that he said: Husain (peace be upon him) was highly virtuous and remained attached with the religion. He offered numerous prayers, fasting and pilgrimages[4]. Abdullah bin Zubair said while describing his prayers: Husain (peace be upon him) remained awake in the night for prayers and kept fasts during the day.

He used to offer thousand units of prayers in one day and walked for the holy pilgrimage (Hajj) twenty five times[5]. This is an evidence of his excellence in servitude and humility towards the divine threshold of Allah (s.w.t.). On one of those days, he held the pillar of Kabah and was supplicating and expressing his servitude and humility in the divine threshold by praising and exalting Allah (s.w.t.) in the following manner:

“O Allah! You blessed me with bounties but did not find me grateful, tested me with afflictions but did not find me patient; You did not deprived me of the bounties due to my lack of gratitude and did not increase my afflictions due to my lack of patience. O my Lord! Nothing but kindness suit the Kind”![6]

If one wishes to know the way of supplication, servitude and humility of this oppressed Imam in the divine threshold of Allah (s.w.t.), it is sufficient for him to refer to the supplication of Arafah.

Height of Seeking Justice

The household of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) is unmatchable in this world when it comes to justice and support for the oppressed. An incident that has been narrated in the books of history regarding the justice of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), depicts that he was devoted to truth and immersed in justice. He advised his children:

كُونَا لِلظَّالِمِ خَصْماً وَلِلْمَظْلُومِ عَوْناً

“Envy the oppressor and support the oppressed”.[7]

Imam Husain (peace be upon him), is the son of that same father and the inheritor of his qualities. More than anyone else, it was he who felt the most pain and became immensely angry when the rulers of the Umayyad dynasty and their agents committed atrocities upon the people. His uprising was an uprising against oppression, tyranny and atrocities, and his movement was a movement which delivered the oppressed and the deprived.

One of the incidents which stands witness to the intensity with which Imam Husain (peace be upon him) supported the oppressed and defended the deprived, is the incident of Arainab, the daughter of Ishaq and the wife of Abdullah bin Sallam. Yazid, who was the successor and heir of Muawiyah and one who had wealth, position, power, beautiful maids, female dancers and self-purchasing singers in his control, in spite of all this, had his lustful eyes on a married woman, whose chastity and honor should have been protected by him and his father Muawiah.

Like rowdies and lustful people who are brought up in a vicious and sinful atmosphere, Yazid became restless for her but since that woman was a decent, chaste and innocent one, he could not have access to her even by means of deceiving and deviating her with ways of piety. Muawiyah, the filthy and indecent ruler who made the people call him the Commander of the faithful, in order to fulfill the lustful and sinful desires of his son Yazid, tried to design an unprecedented and astonishing plot. He separated that unfortunate husband from his decent and beautiful wife and thus arranged the modes of fulfilling the desires of his son with that woman.

However, Imam Husain (peace be upon him) stood with bravery and zeal against this wicked and satanic decision of Muawiyah and caused the failure of his wicked plot. Husain (peace be upon him) depicted the Hashemite zeal and honor, and his own interest in securing the sanctity of Muslims, by preventing Yazid from fulfilling his filthy and impure desires. The separation that was created by Muawiyah’s wickedness turned into a connection and His Holiness prevented a great atrocity from being committed on Abdullah bin Salam and his wife. This incident is registered eternally as a praiseworthy and virtuous one in the history of Imam Ali’s (peace be upon him) dynasty whereas it is counted among the oppressions and atrocities of the Umayyad dynasty.[8]

Guardian of the Deprived

Imam Husain (peace be upon him) offered his prayer and came out. He witnessed a poor Bedouin, went back and called Qumbar.

Qumbar said: At your service, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

His holiness said: How much money is left with us for the expenditure?

He said: Two hundred dirham, which you told me to distribute among the members of the household.

He said: Bring it to me! Someone who needs this money more than us has arrived. Then he took that money, came out and gave it to the Bedouin.[9]

One day, His Holiness went to meet Usama bin Zaida at his house. Usama was crying and expressing his sorrow.

Imam asked: Brother, why are you sad?

He said: I have taken a loan of six hundred dirhams.

Imam Husain (peace be upon him) said: Your debts are on me.

Usama said: I fear that I might die without my debts being paid.

Imam said: You will not die until I pay all your debts.

His Holiness paid all his debts before his death.[10]

The told him: What can this young man do in this condition? He said: You are not aware of this household,

Obligations of the month of supplication - A memoir of His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani

Obligations of the month of supplication - A memoir of His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani

In the name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

“Your Lord has said, ’Call Me, and I will hear you!”

“O Allah! Send Your Mercy upon Mohammad and the Household of Mohammad, especially upon Your Guardian, the Reviver of Your tradition, the Establisher of Your Affair, the Inviter towards You, the Guide towards Your Path. O Allah! Hasten his time of Relief and ease his path of arrival and bless us with his union and regard us among his supporters and assistants”.

Felicitations and congratulations on the arrival of the holy month of Shaban, the month of descending blessings, the month of noble Eids, the month of the manifestation of divine light.

This noble month is an appropriate opportunity, a majestic and glorious occasion for supplications and prayers, for seeking the Relief of Prophet’s Holy Progeny (peace be upon them), and requesting the hasty reappearance of our Imam, and fulfilling the divine Promise to the honorable Apostles and to all the nations and countries, especially the oppressed ones and the ones awaiting the day of Universal Justice and the Monotheistic Islamic Governance, and the honoring of divine signs, the revival of the affairs of the Holy Progeny (peace be upon them), the announcement of devotional life, the month of conducting extensive programs of supplications.

It is appropriate for us throughout this month that we remember and recollect the virtues of the Holy Progeny (peace be upon them); their lofty positions and sublime status should not cease from remembrance. The religious sessions and commemorations, and the lectures given on these occasions, should all be directed towards the world of nearness and spiritual experience, especially, we must all focus and lay great emphasis, individually and collectively, in solitude and open, on the supplications and prayers for the hasty reappearance and Relief of the divine Remainder, our Master, Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his immediate reappearance) in the entire month.

Prayers for His Holiness and for his hasty reappearance, is a prayer for the entire humanity, for all the tribes and creeds, for the strong and the weak, for the knowledgeable and the ignorant, for the poor and the rich.

The reappearance and immediate Relief of the Affair of His Holiness, the only divine caliph, the unique successor of all the Apostles, divine messengers and all the purified Imams, will cause the deliverance of humanity from ignorance, misguidance and waywardness, from all oppressions and atrocities. A significant section of Islamic teachings and guidelines of religious leaders, comprise of those recommendations that are made for supplications, prayers, invocation of Allah (s.w.t.), and secret whisperings with Allah (s.w.t.). It is recommended to such an extent that it is said, “Supplication is the brain of servitude and worship”. (Wasail Al-Shia, volume 7, chapter 2, Hadith 8615).

Quranic verses, narrations and traditions, all lay great emphasis on the recommendation of supplications and invoking Allah (s.w.t.) by means of His Best Names; “To Allah belong the Best Names, so supplicate Him by them”. Supplicating by each name among the Best Names of Allah (s.w.t.) has its own specific effects and great cognitive messages.

A supplication enlightens and illuminates the house, eradicates the darkness, elevates the servant, and causes his ascension. If this supplication is for common interests and social success, its rewards and virtue is much more and if it is done for the Guardian of Affair and the Divine Argument, one cannot assess the level of reward and virtue that it holds. Supplication for His Holiness is in fact a supplication for all the living beings from humans to Jins and Angels. The Relief of His Holiness is the Relief of all the Prophets and Apostles, and all the devotees of Justice, Knowledge, Cognition, Awakening, Security and Ease.

In this opportunity, its benefits and great impacts cannot be reckoned and one feels incapable of comprehending and speaking about the meanings, teachings and guidelines that are narrated in some supplications that are specific to His Holiness (may Allah hasten his reappearance).

in prayer for the hasty reappearance, the causes of His Holiness’ Relief will be established.

Supplication is a school; supplication is a lesson and divine university for everyone; a lesson of knowing Allah (s.w.t.), His Messenger (peace be upon him and his progeny) and the Imams (peace be upon them). It is suitable to conduct supplication programs for the Master of time, Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance), extensively and comprehensively and collectively, especially in this noble month, so that all of us benefit from the blessings of the holy month of Shaban and the Eid of 15th Shaban; especially on the eve of 15th Shaban, which is a virtuous, blessed and holy night, the eve of the birthday of that unique successor of Prophets and the noble vicegerents, the Promised one. It is an immensely virtuous night and its reward is equivalent to the nights of ordinance (Laylatul Qadr), instead, it is one of the nights of ordinance itself. We hope that as a result of the supplications done by the believers and their emphasis in prayer for the hasty reappearance, the causes of His Holiness’ Relief will be established.

O Allah! Hasten the Relief of Your Guardian and Argument, and send Mercy upon him and all his purified forefathers and place us among his supporters and assistants.

Fourteen Thousand Historic Days - On the Occasion of the Demise of Abu Talib (peace be upon him).
A Piece of Literary Work by Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the occasion of the demise of Abu Talib (a.s.).

Fourteen Thousand Historic Days

A piece of writing by His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani.

On the occasion of the demise anniversary of His Holiness Abu Talib (peace be upon him).

In the name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

The lives of mankind’s majority has remained specific for affairs that are personal and individual but there are such reformers and servants of humanity, men of God, the apostles and Allah’s friends, whose lives are spent for the entire society, for history and above all, for Allah (s.w.t.). They serve as a source of pride and honor, dignity and good, development and progress, and for historic reformations. All that we have today as divine, social welfare and deliverance of people from ignorance, invitation towards success and salvation, truth and justice, manifestation of guidance, will remain eternal and everlasting.

The commemoration and remembrance of these days is the commemoration of truth and support of faith. In the history of Islam, these bright and historic days have their own manifestation and the Islamic history is adorned by such days. Among those men who played a significant role in Islam for safeguarding it on extremely sensitive and important circumstances, who should themselves and the day associated to them, rather all the days of their lives and memories must be revived, among them is the Sayyid of Bat’ha, the chief of Mecca and the head of the tribe, one who possessed all the ethical values, who was honored by everyone and praised by all; “the features of kings and the majesty of sages depicted from his face”. Indeed! He is none other than Abu Talib (a.s.), father of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him). He is someone for whom the famous Arab sage “Uktum bin Saifi” said when asked, ‘From whom did you learn wisdom and leadership, commandership and mastership?’ He replied, ‘From the expert of knowledge and ethics, the master of Arabs and non-Arabs, Abu Talib the son of Abdul Muttalib’. He was the one who stood in support of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) at the most sensitive time of Islamic history, i.e. the early phase of revelation and the time of Islam’s appearance. His role as the protector and supporter was the most crucial, fundamental and significant one for the deliverance and establishment of Islam as a religion.

He has a right upon the entire Islamic nation and all Muslims are indebted to him. Those 42 years in which he has supported, helped and served the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) is more than fourteen thousand days; each year among which is historic and divine; every single day among the days in which this historic man has supported Islam, the religion of Monotheism and the great movement which guided the human society towards development, progress, self-recognition and the cognition of Allah (s.w.t.), is a day of Allah and a day of Islam.

No one has supported the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) and supported the message of divine invitation as much as him. Abu Talib (peace be upon him), through his astonishing sacrifices and firm confrontation with the enemies of Allah’s religion, forbade them from putting off the divine light.

All his days and all his actions deserve to be remembered and are worthy of taking lessons from. Fourteen thousand days of support and service to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny), are all days of Allah (s.w.t.). Fourteen thousand days of steadfastness, fourteen thousand days of enduring difficulties, deprivations, sanctions and all kinds of pressures and conspiracies by the infidels, provided insurance for Islam.

It was Abu Talib, only Abu Talib and Abu Talib once again whose significant position and immense honor in the society protected the divine religion and supported the holy Prophet in propagating his message in the foremost days and initial years of invitation towards Islam.

The Qasida (ode/laudatory) of Lamiyah written by Abu Talib (a.s.) praising Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him and his progeny) is an example of the height of faith, purity of intention, loyalty and complete support extended by him for the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny). This Qasida, as confessed by some senior literary men and eloquent Arabs, as well as Sunni scholars, is at the height of eloquence and exquisiteness and they consider it better and stronger than the seven Mu’allaqaat (a group of seven long Arabic poems that are considered the best work of pre-Islamic Arabia – The Hanging Poes) and none other than Abu Talib had the ability to write such a marvelous ode. This poetry depicts to what extent Abu Talib (a.s.), that man of firm belief and remarkable determination, was certain and determined in his support of the divine Apostleship of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) and how strong, fierce and veracious he was against the enemies that he stood alone in the defense of Islam and placed this religion on such a firm path from which it could not be removed.

Just like the days in which Abu Talib (a.s.) accompanied the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) are the brightest days of history, similarly, this poetry is also the most outstanding, unique and fundamental one among the thousands of poetries written by Arabs and non-Arabs praising the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny). It is appropriate that religious students and scholars memorize this poetry which comprises of almost a hundred couplets.

The young generation and the current Islamic society must consider the life of His Eminence, Abu Talib (a.s.) as their role-model and milestone, and learn the great historic lessons from him. This precious and meaningful history must be added in the syllabus of schools and religious institution. It is unfortunate that a personality like Abu Talib (a.s.), which is one that cannot be detached from the advent of Islam and the time of invitation of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), is unknown to our youth.

According to the two books named Misbah, Misbah of Sheikh Tusi (r.a.) and Misbah of Kaf’ami (r.a.), the day of demise of this historic man is 26th of Rajab. It is appropriate that we all commemorate this day and conduct programs on this occasion in his memory, and through mourning sessions, lectures and by writing articles on the rights of this man over all Muslims, one must praise this great personality of Islamic history.

Allah's Guest

Allah's Guest

Heartfelt greetings on the arrival of the holy month of Rajab and the blessed birthday of his holiness, Imam Mohammad bin Ali Al-Baqir (peace be upon him) in the threshold of his highness Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance) and the followers of the school of Ahl Al-Bait (peace be upon them).

Enlightening Words

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: “If you wish to know if there is good inside your existence or not, focus on your inner being. If you love the people of worship and obedience and dislike the sinners and wrongdoers, then you have good in your existence and Allah (s.w.t.) loves you. But if you dislike the worshippers and obedient servants and love those who commit sins and wrongdoing, then there is no good inside you and Allah (s.w.t.) envies you. Every man will be raised and resurrected with the one whom he loves and befriends.”

(Wasail Al-Shia, v. 16, p. 183, Hadith 1).

Imam Mohammad Baqir (peace be upon him) said: “One who remains steadfast and firm on his belief and devotion towards us, the household of infallibility and purification, during the occultation of the Imam of his time (may Allah hasten his reappearance), Allah (s.w.t.) will grant him the rewards and remuneration of thousand martyrs from the Battles of Badr and Hunayn.”

 (Ithbat Al-Hudat, v. 3, p. 467).

Imam Mohammad Baqir (peace be upon him) said: “One who invokes Allah (s.w.t.) through our medium, shall succeed, and one who invokes Him without the medium of us, the holy Prophet’s household (peace be upon them), he will be disappointed and destroyed.”

(Amaali Sheikh Tusi, v. 1, p. 175).

Acquire provision from the first night and day of Rajab.

First Night of Rajab

The first night of Rajab is a holy night and the following rites are recommended in it:
First: At the sight of the new moon, it is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer:

اَللّهُمَّ اَهِلَّهُ عَلَیْنا بِالاْمْنِ وَالاْیمانِ وَالسَّلامَةِ وَ الاْسْلامِ رَبّى وَ ر َبُّكَ اللهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ؛

“O Allah, cause it (i.e. the moon) to appear carrying for us security, faith, safety and Islam. Your and my Lord is Allah, the Glorified and Majestic.”

It has been also reported that when his eyes fell on the new moon of Rajab, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) used to say the following:

اَللّهُمَّ بارِكْ لَنا فى رَجَبٍ وَشَعْبانَ وَبَلِّغْنا شَهْرَ رَمَضانَ وَاَعِنّا عَلَى الصِّیامِ وَالْقِیامِ وَحِفْظِ اللِّسانِ وَغَضِّ الْبَصَرِ وَلا تَجْعَلْ حَظَّنا مِنْهُ الْجُوعَ وَالْعَطَشَ؛

“O Allah, (please do) pour out Your blessings upon us in Rajab and Sha’ban. Make us attain Ramadan and help us observe fasting, perform acts of worship, suppress our tongues (from saying anything improper), and cast down our eyes (against what is forbidden for us to look at). Do not make our share of Ramadan only hunger and thirst.”

Second: It is highly advisable to bathe oneself at the first night of Rajab.

Third: It is recommended to visit the shrine of Imam Al-Husain (peace be upon him).

Fourth: It is recommended to offer, after the obligatory Maghrib prayer, a twenty unit prayer and to recite in each unit Surah al-Fatiha once and Surah al-Tawheed once, and to separate between each couple of units with Taslim. Whoever offers this prayer, his family members, property, sons, and he himself will be kept saved from harm, rescued against the grave torture, and pass the Sirat as swiftly as lightning without being called to account.

Fifth: After the Isha’ Prayer, it is recommended to offer a two unit prayer in the first unit of which Surah al-Fatiha should be recited once, Surah al-Inshirah (No. 94) recited once, and Surah al-Tawif recited three times. In the second unit, Surah Al-Fatiha, al-Inshirah, al-Tawheed, al-Falaq and Al-Nas should be recited once each. After Taslim, the following litany should be repeated thirty times:

لا اِلهَ اِلا اللهُ

There is no god save Allah.

Similarly, Salawaat on Holy Prophet and his Progeny (peace be upon them) should be recited thirty times.

The reward of this prayer is that whoever offers it, will have all his sins forgiven and will return as sin-free as the day of his birth.

Imam Jafar bin Mohammad Al-Sadiq (peace be upon them) said: “Imam Ali (peace be upon him) used to devote himself to acts of worship in an exclusive way at four nights,

1. The first night of Rajab

2. The Middle night (i.e. fifteenth) of Sha’ban;

3. The Eid al-Fitr Night (i.e. the first night of Shawwal)

4. The Nahr night (the tenth of Dhul Hijjah).”

Imam Mohammad Al-Taqi (peace be upon him) is reported to have recommended the following supplicatory prayer at the first night of Rajab after the Isha’ Prayer:

“O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your being the King, having absolute power over all things, and whatever matter You want to happen shall happen. O Allah, I turn my face towards You asking You in the name of Your Prophet, Mohammad, the Prophet of Mercy (may Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Household). O Mohammad! O Messenger of Allah! I seek your intercession for me with Allah, your Lord and my Lord, so that He may respond to my request. O Allah! I beseech You in the name of Your Prophet Mohammad and the Imams from his household, peace be upon him and them, to respond to my request.”

You may then mention your requests.

First Day of Rajab

The first day of Rajab is a holy day on which the following rites are advisable:

  1. It is advisable to observe fasting on this day. According to narrations, Prophet Noah (a.s.) embarked on the Ark on such a day; he therefore ordered his companions to observe fasting. Hence, whoever observes fasting on this day, Hellfire will move away from him for a distance of one year’s walk.
  2. It is highly advisable to bathe oneself at the first night of Rajab. In this respect, some scholars have reported the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) as saying, “Whoever receives the month of Rajab and bathes himself in the first, middle, and last of it, will be released from all of his sins to return as pure as the day of his birth”.
  3. It is also recommended to visit the tomb of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) on this day. Sheikh Tusi (r.a.) has narrated on the authority of Bashir al-Dahhan that Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said, “Whoever visits (Imam) al-Husayn ibn Ali (a.s.) on the first day of Rajab, Almighty Allah will forgive him all his sins”.
  4. The Prayer of Salman Al-Farsi (May Allah be pleased with him): On the first of Rajab, it is advisable to offer ten units of this prayer separating each couple with a Taslim. In each unit, one should recite Surah al-Fatiha one time, Surah al-Tawheed three times, and Surah al-Kafiroon three times. After Taslim, it is recommended to raise the hands up and say the following litany:

“There is no God save Allah, the One and Only Who has no partner. To Him is the kingdom and to Him is all praise. He gives life and causes to die while He is Ever-living and never dies. In His hand is the good and He has power over all things”.

The following litany should be said thereafter:

“O Allah, verily, none can ever divest him whom You decide to give, none can ever give

him whom You decide to deprive, and nothing can ever stop that which You decide.”

Then, one should pass his hands over the face and submit his requests.

Excerpts from the Message of Grand Ayatollah on the Occasion of the Arrival of Rajab.

In the name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.

Peace be upon the month of Rajab; Peace be upon Rajabiyyoon (the people of Rajab), Peace and blessings be upon the ones who observe fast; Divine forgiveness and mercy be upon those who perform E’tekaaf; Peace be upon you honorable men who have responded to the call of “Aynar Rajabiyoon” (where are the people of Rajab), who are sitting near Allah’s table of mercy and benefitting from His endless bounties. You must feel proud of yourselves and glorify this great success and thank Allah (s.w.t.) in return.

Which worldly pleasure can be compared with these states of spiritual pleasures? Where are those people who are after the materialistic luxuries and the inappropriate joys of this world which are mixed with sins and quick-ending pleasures? Where are the kings and the sons of kings? Is it possible to ascertain a materialistic value for attaining the proximity of Allah (s.w.t.) and acquiring the high position of humanity? Never, indeed never! This is where one should recite this holy verse of Quran with contemplation and concentration: “O you who have faith! Answer Allah and the Apostle when he summons you to that which will give you life.”

Indeed! This is the actual life and a life filled with spirituality, purity of soul, self-purification and proximity of Allah (s.w.t.).

We will prepare ourselves to perform the religious duties and obligations and say to the Prophet of mercy, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his progeny): In this duration, when your twelfth noble son, Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance) is living in occultation, all of us – especially the youth and ones who observe fasting – declare with all our might that like a brave and valiant soldier, we will support the rich teachings of the Holy Progeny (peace be upon them) and consider ourselves obligated to invite the people of our society towards good deeds and stop them from performing bad deeds, will fight against the distortions and deviations that have entered the religion, and will safeguard this honor until the reappearance of the Guardian of time, Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance).

Respected people of the community! Consider these moments precious and pray for yourselves and others, for the deliverance of the Islamic nations from the hands of the enemies of Islam, for the success and victory of Muslims all over the world, and for the Relief of the Great Remainder of Allah (s.w.t.) – May Allah (s.w.t.) hasten his Relief and bring his arrival time closer and regard us among his supporters and warriors. Amen! O Lord of the Worlds!

Lotfullah Saafi

1429 Hijri.

Laylatur Raghaeb – A Night of Desires.

The first Thursday night of the month of Rajab is named Laylatur Raghaeb, which means the night of desires.

On this great night, through offering its specific prayers and expressing repentance and powerlessness before Allah (s.w.t.) and seeking Mercy from the threshold of Allah, we may quicken our steps towards the path of our Friend and request Allah, the Most-beneficent, the Most-merciful, to grant our wishes.

We must request Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) to hasten in the Relief of our Master, Imam Mahdi (may our lives be sacrificed on him).We must request Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) that during the long and difficult period of occultation and anticipation, not a single deviation occurs in our faith and certainty. We must request Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) to help us remain firm and steadfast in our religion, and on the path of obeying His ultimate Guardian, Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance). We must request Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) for reforming the affair of His Guardian and the followers of his holiness. We must request Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) for all that we desire.

Has He not promised the answering of prayers by saying:

“When My servants ask you about Me, [tell them that] I am indeed nearmost. I answer the supplicant’s call when he calls Me.”

Thus, we must call Him with the cognition of His mercy, benevolence, beneficence, knowledge and unbounded power, and must know that He is near us, extremely near.

.

Importance of offering the prayer of the First Thursday night of Rajab (Laylatur Raghaeb)

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him and his progeny) has recommended an immensely significant prayer on this night whose reward is abundant: numerous sins will be forgiven due to this prayer and requests will be answered.

Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) said:

By the One in whose hand is my life, no servant or maid among the servants and maids of Allah (s.w.t.) will offer this prayer but that Allah (s.w.t.) will forgive his sins even if they were like the froth of ocean, and same in number as sand and in weight as mountains and in quantity as the leaves of trees; and on the day of Judgment, seven hundred people from his own relatives, all worthy of Hellfire, will be interceded by him.

Whoever offers this prayer, on the first night inside the grave, the Almighty will send the reward off this prayer in the best, enlightened and eloquent form. When inquired, will reply, ‘‘My Beloved,, glad tidings to you that you have found salvation from every hardship and horror..’’When asked,, ‘‘Who are you?’’ ‘‘By God I haven't seen any one more beautiful than you,, I haven't heard a word sweeter than yours,, or a fragrance better than you?’’ In reply, ‘‘I am that prayer which you offered on the eve of the first Friday of the month of Rajab. I have come to you to be your companion in this loneliness, to remove from you your fright and horror. Be lest assured that my shelter will be with you until the blowing off the Horn off the Day off Judgment. So, be happy, for you shall never be deprived of goodness”.

Method of offering this Night’s Prayer

One should observe fasting on the first Thursday in Rajab. Between the Maghrib and Isha’ Prayers, one should offer a twelve unit prayer, each couple of which is separated by Taslim (i.e. the concluding part of a ritual prayer). In each unit, one should recite Surah Al-Fatiha once, Surah Al-Qadr three times and Surah Al-Tawheed twelve times. After accomplishing the prayer, one should repeat the following invocation of blessings seventy times:

اَللّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِىِّ الاُمِّىِّ وَعَلى آلِهِ

O Allah, (please do) send blessing on Mohammad, the Ummi Prophet, and upon his Household.

Then one should prostrate himself and repeat the following litany seventy times:

سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

Glorified (is He), Holy (is He), the Lord of the angels and the Spirit.

Then, one should raise the head from prostration and repeat the following supplicatory prayer seventy times:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَتَجاوَزْ عَمّا تَعْلَمُ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْعَلِىُّ الاَعْظَمُ

O my Lord, (please do) forgive (me), have mercy (upon me), and overlook (my wrongdoings) that You know. Surely You are the Highest, the Greatest.

One should then prostrate himself again and repeat the following litany seventy times:

سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

Glorified (is He), Holy (is He), the Lord of the angels and the Spirit.

Then, one may pray Almighty Allah for granting his needs for they will be surely granted, God willing.

A special literary work by Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the event of the birthday of Lady Zahra (s.a.)

Whatever has been written and spoken or will be written and spoken in the future about the comprehensive and dynamic personality of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her), can reach nowhere near the true virtues and status of this glorious Lady who is the Mistress of all women of the world.

Although the life of Prophet’s beloved daughter, Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her), was extremely short due to the oppressions and atrocities that she had to face, but in spite of it, this short life has truly served as a role-model for the entire humanity and especially, the seekers of divine truth.

As the poet said:

ضلّ من جعل مقیاس الحیاة الطولا

The criteria and barometer of a successful life should not be the number of years lived by a person, but the actual criteria should be the benefits gained from that life by others. The life of Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her), just like the life of her honorable father, Allah’s Messenger Mohammad bin Abdullah (peace be upon him and his progeny), was full of blessings and abundant bounties.

In the entire universe and the world of existence, there is no one closer to the holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) than Lady Zahra (peace be upon her), from the aspects of knowledge, etiquettes, lifestyle, human virtues and status, spiritual and physical attributes, and the distinguished features.

Even though the length of the life of Prophet’s daughter’s (peace be upon her) was not more than 18 years but its breadth and vastness is definitely more than millions of years. It is remarkable that a person in such a short life-span performs such great actions which are unmatchable by others even in thousands of years. Considering these aspects, how much ever we discuss about the status and virtue of her eminence, it will evidently not be sufficient.

Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) holds all those positions which can be assumed for a perfect human being. Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her) holds a distinguished status in all the dimensions of Islamic life such as faith, divine cognition, servitude of Allah, heedlessness towards the world, sacrifice for others, being a good spouse, upbringing of children, protection of chastity and veil, safeguarding all those values and dignities mentioned for women in Islam, and serving as the unique example of all the ten attributes mentioned for women (which are also considered praiseworthy for men) in the chapter Ahzab and being a role model for everyone.

The entire life-sketch of Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her) is miraculous for all human beings that how a woman can obtain all the sublime and top-most positions and yet continue her ascending journey towards Allah (s.w.t.).
The luminescent existence of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) is such that some of the wives of Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) described her in this manner:

“I haven’t seen anyone greater than Fatima except her father”.

The stand taken by Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) after the demise of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him & his household) is extremely magnanimous and astonishing. She took the responsibility of propagating the truth among the people and delivered a great sermon inside the Prophet’s mosque.

It was not possible to deliver a sermon in such difficult circumstances and unveil the truth for the entire Muslim world but Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) is that unique personality which gave such an eloquent and remarkable speech that the memory of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) revived in the hearts of the listeners.

Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) entered the Prophet’s Mosque in this manner that she had covered herself with a veil from head to foot in such a way that the veil was dragging along the ground and the women from the dynasty of Bani Hashim had surrounded her. A curtain was raised between the men and women on the command of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) so that she can deliver her speech standing behind it and she delivered an extempore sermon on hearing which there was pin drop silence in the audience and tears shed from their eyes constantly.

The existence of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) is a heavenly and celestial one. Individuals like us can neither understand the greatness of her personality nor describe it worthwhile.

Among the pillars of the pure household of Prophet (peace be upon them), Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) is doubtlessly an immensely important pillar. When the verse of Tatheer descended, she was the only woman among the five individuals for whom the verse was revealed and who served as an implication for it.

And in the verse of Mubahila, she was the only woman present alongside her father, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his progeny). Similarly, regarding the verse of Mawaddah, when the Prophet was asked about the implication of Qurba , he said: Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husain (peace be upon them).

The blessed existence of Lady Fatima (peace be upon her) serves as an argument and proof for the truthfulness of the Shia sect.

Once when I was in Medina, I heard that there is a bookstore in the city where anti-Shia books are sold. I went to that bookstore and began to study the books available there. I saw that a book was kept on the table of the bookstore’s owner, which had the name “Wa Jaa’ Daural Majoos” on it.

I started a conversation with the owner of the bookstore. He named some books which I hadn’t heard of. Then he asked me if I knew about those books or not?

I said: I do not know about these books but I know for a fact that all these books are filled with lie and false accusations.

He asked: How can you say this without reading those books?

As I opened the book, I proved it for him at the first glance that the things that are written in this book are false and fabricated.

After a while, he asked me about my view on the caliphate of those two people?

I told them: What kind of a question is this! It is evident that someone who doesn’t believe in them will be considered infidel and one who dies without gaining their cognition will die the death of ignorance and infidelity.

He was constantly trying to know about the beliefs of Shias regarding Caliphate.

I said: Our belief is the same as the belief of Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her). On hearing these words from me, he became silent.

It is evident that he could not reject the belief of Lady Zahra (s.a.) regarding the Caliphs.

Then he asked: What is your view on this (make believe) consensus?

I said: We remain on the belief of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her).

When I repeated this statement once again with more firmness, he could not say anything in response.

In short, the stand taken by Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) is a stand which strengthens the foundation and the very roots of the Shia school of thought and approves it vehemently. Therefore, we must make the teaching of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) available and accessible for everyone because these very beliefs and teachings serve as proof and argument for the justification of Shias.

In these days of commemoration, we must attentively study the miraculous speech of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) under which she has explained all the aspects of life and the necessary teachings of Islam.

We must focus on the greatness of this statement of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) in which she said, ‘The best of all women is one who is not witnessed by a stranger and who does not witness a stranger’. The lovers and devotees of Lady Zahra (s.a.) must pay attention to these golden words.

Such programs must always be held on this great lady, who is the Mistress of the worlds, and her virtues must be remembered and revived because this will help in gaining Allah’s proximity and it will serve as a significant medium of keeping alive the cause of Prophet’s pure household (peace be upon them) and especially Lady Zahra (peace be upon her).

Nevertheless, those who glorify and praise the position and status of her eminence must also act upon her teachings and commands. As Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in one of his couplets:

تعْصِی الْإِلَهَ وَ أَنْتَ تُظْهِرُ حُبَّهُ                             هَذَا مُحَالٌ فِی الْفِعَالِ بَدِیعٌ‏
                 لَوْ كَانَ حُبُّكَ صَادِقاً لَأَطَعْتَهُ                           إِنَّ الْمُحِبَّ لِمَنْ یُحِبُّ مُطِیع

(You disobey Allah and express love for Him; this is impossible and an unprecedented act. If your love for Him was true, You would’ve obeyed him; a lover is always obedient towards his love)

It means that the love of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) is the sign of our truthfulness and righteousness. May Allah grant us the opportunity to steadfastly walk on the path of this great lady and always continue to obey His commands, and follow His Messenger and the holy Progeny (peace be upon them).

Traditions on the Mushaf of Lady Fatima (s.a.) and its content.

Traditions on the Mushaf of Lady Fatima (s.a.) and its content.
Traditions on the Mushaf of Lady Fatima (s.a.)

Traditions on the Mushaf (Book) of Lady Fatima (s.a.) and its content.

Question: Sheikh Kulayni narrates from Imam Jafar bin Mohammad (a.s.) in his book Al-Kafi that his majesty said to Abu Basir: “the Mushaf of Fatima (s.a.) is with us; what do people know about Mushaf of Fatima (s.a.)?”

Did the holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) and his companions know about the Quran of Fatima (s.a.) and were they aware of it? If the holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) wasn’t aware of it, then how did the holy Progeny know come to know of it?

Answer: Among the reports and narrations, especially those narrations that are reported by Sunni reporters, there exist such narrations in vast numbers that have an uncommon and strange content but are either neglected or clarified.

When Bukhari, the famous author who calls his book Sahih (absolutely authentic), selected only a small number of narrations from a cluster of six hundred thousand narrations[1], then in this large number of narrations, there are undoubtedly such narrations which cannot and must not be reckoned as a part of Islamic beliefs.

Ibn e Uqdah, one of the memorizers of Hadith, says, “I have memorized one hundred thousand Musnad (reliable) narrations and I have reported three hundred thousand narrations apart from them”[2]. In spite of this, in these books of narrations known as Sihah, Masaneed, and Jawameh, many unacceptable contents exist. Likewise, even the narrations of the Shia school of thought, though rarely, have some narrations among them which are not devoid of strange and uncommon meanings. On the other hand, merely the uncommonness of the text does not cause its rejection, but fundamentally, we must always act on the basis of the definitive (Muhkamat) narrations and define our faith and beliefs only according to the criteria of the well defined principles and fundamental rules. If one has an objection in these definitive principles, only then it will be considered for a discussion.

The fundamental laws and principles that distinguish Shias from other sects are the ones derived from the clear verses and the authentic narrations, upon which reliable and continuous reports have clear implication, such as the chapter Al-Insan, the verse of Mawaddah [3], the verse of Wilayah[4], the verse of Tableegh[5], and many such verses; along with the authentic narrations like the Hadith of Saqlain with the emphasis on «مَا إنْ تَمَسَّکْتُم بِهِما لَنْ تَضِلُّوا أبَداً»[6] along with«لاتُعَلِّمُوهُم فَإنَّهُم أعْلَمُ مِنْکُم»[7], as well as the formal announcement of Ghadir and other such narrations.

Similarly, it must be remembered that the strangeness and unlikelihood of the text is not much problematic, if so, then the deniers of Islam and Quran have also objected to the miracles mentioned in the Holy Quran regarding the prophets, such as the staff of Prophet Musa (a.s.) turning into snake[8], or the appearance of a she-camel from the heart of a mountain[9] will also be denied by those who do not believe in Allah, but their denial will not change the reality or affect the truth.

If you and all the Muslims who believe in Quran accept all those positions that were given to Prophet Solomon (a.s.), and that satans were at his disposal and worked for him as masons and divers, then why do you deny that the holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) or the members of his Holy Progeny (a.s.) can also be bestowed with such special positions by Allah (s.w.t.)? If a person has faith in the unseen world and the limitless power of Allah (s.w.t.), he will never consider such special ranks and knowledge as far-fetched with reference to these personalities, as they all come under the seamless power of Allah (s.w.t.).

A Patron of Bravery and Courage

A Patron of Bravery and Courage
Lady Zainab (s.a.) - A Patron of Bravery and Courage
A Memoir by Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani in the virtue of Lady Zainab (s.a.)

Zainab (s.a.), indeed Zainab, a name that comprises of only 4 Arabic letters, but a personality that bears all the virtues of humanity and holds all the values that Allah Almighty has mentioned for a man or woman in the 35th verse of the chapter Al-Ahzab.

A fine example of faith, knowledge and cognizance, a role model of patience, truth and steadfastness, an epitome of courage, a lady who inherited oration and eloquence from her father, and all the moral values and etiquettes of her mother accumulated in her existence, a lady who is a source of pride not just for Muslim women, but for the entire Islamic nation, all men and women.
Her lifestyle, her veil, infallibility and chastity, her prayers, greatness, virtue and magnanimity, are all praiseworthy. The loftiness of her status and position, her support for the religion and rejection of the ruling transgression in history will always be remembered. She denounced and defeated the supreme oppressors of her time, such that the Umayyad dynasty was thrown away by the world like a trash in the bin.

Indeed she protected Islam, the pride and honor of Hashemite Dynasty, the personality of her honorable grandfather Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) and the holy Qur’an. Islam, Quran and the religion of monotheism, are all indebted to her. Just the thought of how the history would have unfolded without her, is extremely scary.
In the present world, both men and women, are indispensably in need of learning the messages of life and the reviving teachings from the great school of Lady Zainab (s.a.), from this great woman and her astonishing stand in the defense of Islam and Quran, in the way of denouncing falsehood, oppression, transgression, unlawful domination, with the intention of establishing the truth.
We hope that today, Muslim women, choose her highness, Lady Zainab (s.a.), as a role model for their life, take lessons from this great lady of Islam for performing all their religious duties and obligations, take pride before the world in accepting such a great lady as their role model, and strive to safeguard the name and spiritual message of Lady Zainab (s.a.) eternally.

An Excerpt from the writings of Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the days of Fatimiyyah

An Excerpt from the writings of Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani on the days of Fatimiyyah
Fatimiyyah - In the writings of Grand Ayatollah Saafi Golpaygani

.

What can be said to describe the virtues of the Holy Progeny (peace be upon them), especially Lady Zahra (s.a.) and the blessings of her existence?

We must know that all we have is only because of the Holy Progeny (peace be upon them). Beside them, whatever is said by anyone, is said based on an individual and personal perception of human life, which is by no means connected to an authentic source and cannot be trusted.

Everything that the humanity requires for its guidance exists in the school of Ahl Al-Bayt (peace be upon them), referring to which the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Indeed am leaving among you two weighty things, the Book of Allah and the Holy Progeny”. It means take everything from Prophet’s Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) and take nothing from elsewhere.

Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said, “do not go ahead of them and do not fall behind them; because if you go ahead, you will be misguided and if you fall behind, you will be destroyed.

The Pivotal Role and Special Virtue of Her Highness (s.a.)

Among the Household of Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Zahra (peace be upon her) holds a pivotal position and possesses a significant status, i.e. all the infallible Imams (peace be upon them) are proud of her existence. In fact, her holy existence is a Divine Argument for the entire Household of Prophet (peace be upon him), which means for establishing their truth and defeating the usurpers and the transgressors, they all seek her as a proof.  Each member of this divine Household is a divine argument, but from these aspects, the argumentation of Lady Zahra (s.a.) is greater than the rest of them.

Lady Fatima Zahra (s.a.) is the “mistress of all the women in the world”, the essential part of Prophet (p.b.u.h.), the companion of Allah’s Wali (guardian), a lady whose participation in the event of Mubahila was exclusive, and among the entire Household as well, she is the only lady who holds the status of infallibility and purity, like her father, husband and sons.

A True Copy of the Original

With the exception of the position of Prophet-hood, she was a true copy of her father in the aspect of his etiquettes, knowledge and virtues, and like all the other infallible Imams, her life, actions and behavior, constituted the religion and Sharia, and served as a guide towards the divine rule.

She possessed Imamate in her knowledge and guidance, and was the Supreme Lady of Islam in her chastity, purity, veil and generosity; her existence proved to be a great example and served as a role model for others.

The Sermon of Fadak, a Miracle of Lady Zahra (s.a.).

One of the miracles of Lady Zahra (s.a.) is her extempore sermon of Fadak. Her Highness, in that atmosphere of strangulation and deceit, having suffered the extremely unbearable and sorrowful demise of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) as well as other atrocities, delivered this sermon, which was so high in eloquence that even Imam Ali (a.s.), who is known as the Imam of eloquence and the Master of oration, could not deliver such a comprehensive, elegant, devastating and eternal speech, mainly due to the inappropriateness of the circumstances for him.

The magnanimity of Lady Zahra (s.a.) was so spellbinding that not a single person in that historic gathering and unforgettable trial could stop her from delivering the sermon. It was as though Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) himself was speaking, and most of the people who were present in that gathering began to weep upon hearing those realities.

Nevertheless, this sermon comprises of such immensely sublime points that it stands as one of the miracles of the Holy Household (peace be upon them) and therefore, it has been quoted in the book Balaghaat Al-Nisa (Eloquence of Women) written in the second century of the Prophet’s Migration (Hijrah).

The attributes of Her Highness are numerous; one of them is mentioned in the Hadith in which the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) wishes to console and comfort Lady Zahra (s.a.), by saying, “O Fatima! Good tidings to you that Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) is from you”. It is a very significant Hadith in which Prophet, the greatest man ever known to the world, for comforting the soul and preparing his beloved and unique daughter to face the atrocities and afflictions of the future, consoles her in this manner that Mahdi (May Allah hasten his reappearance) is from you. It means everything is from and for you. The circle of this world will ends at you, the success of truth over evil and light over darkness is because of you. Nevertheless, the virtues of Lady Zahra (s.a.) are countless.

The commemoration of the event of Fatimiyyah, the stands taken by Fatima (s.a.), the life of Fatima (s.a.), the piety of Fatima (s.a.), the prayers of Fatima (s.a.), the knowledge and wisdom of Fatima (s.a.), must always be a part of our life and these points must be discussed and explained in our speeches, books and at every suitable opportunity.

The afflictions that Lady Fatima (s.a.) has suffered, which are so evident and clear that even in books like Al-Nihayah, Ibn Aseer – an author who belongs to the Sunni sect and has written the book on linguistics- could not stop himself from indicating towards the atrocities committed on Lady Zahra (s.a.) after the demise of Prophet Mohammad (p.b.u.h.) and mentions it clearly for everyone.

History must be told for the people. The words of Lady Zahra (s.a.), especially her miraculous sermon, must be presented in front of the world.

In these days of Fatimiyyah, the celestial personality of this glorious Lady must be honored and revered, and people must express their love and respect for this unique Islamic lady, who is the beloved daughter of the Prophet of Mercy (peace be upon him).

We are in immense need of following the lifestyle of Lady Fatima (s.a.) today. Our society, in order to act upon the Islamic way of wifehood and upbringing of children - for which the best example was set by Fatima (s.a.) – is indispensably in need of imitating her life.

Today, the words of Lady Fatima (s.a.) must stand as the guidelines of leading life for all women and men also. Her Highness taught the world, the true value and actual honor of women and said, “the best of all women is one who herself doesn’t witness a non-Mahram man and who is not witnessed by a non-Mahram man either”.

This is what has kept Lady Zahra (s.a.) alive in the hearts of all the aware, god-worshipping and truth-seeking men till today and will keep her alive until the Day of Judgment.

Fatimiyyah – A revolt against the oppressors.

Fatimiyyah is a historic event; Fatimiyyah is a revolt against oppressors; Fatmiyyah is a Jihad for the success of truth over falsehood and at last, Fatmiyyah is the day of the divine governance of Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance).

Indeed, Fatimiyyah is Ashura, Fatimiyyah is the Night of Ordinance (Laylat Al- Qadr), Fatimiyyah is Ghadir and 15th Shaban; Fatimiyyah is the day of the success of light over darkness.

In the light of propagating the virtues of Her Highness, all the religious aspects, such as the Wilayah (Guardianship) of the pure Imams, the invitation towards Islam, Quran, the school of Ahl Al-Bayt (a.s.) and overall, the message of Allah’s Messenger (p.b.u.h.) must be propagated.

We must fight against the distortions, foreign influences, disorientations, wrong doings, spreading of undesirable and unwanted activities, ignorance and misguidance.

The school of Ahl Al-Bayt (a.s.), is the school of cognition, the school of knowledge and awakening, the school of awareness, justice, equality, intellectual development and the progress of illuminating thoughts; and all these aspects must be explained during these days. We must all realize the value of the Fatimiyyah events and make good use of these fortunate opportunities. Our most important duty is to supplicate and pray with utmost humility in the divine threshold of Allah (s.w.t.) for the immediate reappearance of the beloved son of Lady Zahra (s.a.), Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.).
