The Month of Ramadan – Spring of Supplications

The Month of Ramadan – Spring of Supplications

It is quite apparent that the month of Ramadan, is the spring of supplications and its season. The despaired, defeated, troubled, sorrowful and upset, less patient and endurance-less people become hopeful, rejoiced, forbearing and enduring in this month with the grace of supplication and attention towards the vast mercy of Allah; and reengage themselves with an invincible spirit in the battlefield of life and vitality, showing additional activeness and endeavor.

The month of Ramadan gives this message to humanity that they should not feel defeated in the cobweb of difficulties and hardships of life, and they should not feel scared in facing the happenings of this world, and should not be overcome by circumstances.

The recitation of supplications like Abu Hamza Thumali, Iftitah and other supplications makes a person extremely warm and gritty, and fills him with such joy and spirituality that he forgets all the calamities of this world and his existences sinks in optimism and positivity towards the future. And just as it has arrived in the Hadith that such supplications – which are reported in the month of Ramadan and whose examples are excessive in other months and instances as well – are a believer’s weapon and it gives his existence a definite insurance in front of the accidents, and makes his soul undefeatable.

The entire supplication of Abu Hamza is a program of arming oneself with true moral values, and a lesson of contentment, satisfaction, reliance and love of Allah, His Messenger and religious sages. The same weapon and armor with which the Islamic soldiers used to do Jihad against the enemies of Allah and gave them – who were loaded with weapons and armors – humiliating defeat, and dominated Islam over infidelity.

The same weapon and armor with which Ali (peace be upon Him) – the first and unique soldier of Islam – was armed, and in the battles, who never feared the vast numbers of enemies. The one who never showed his back in any battlefield and said:

"واللہ لو تظاھرت العرب علی قتالی لما ولیت عنھا"

“If the entire Arab nation appears against me to fight me, I will never turn away from them”

Respected readers! Dignified fasting men! Make use of the programs of supplication in this month. Consider your time valuable. Don’t let the opportunity go away because “opportunity evades like the evading clouds”. Talk to Allah and express such gratitude towards Him which is the appropriate manner of gratification. Do not turn away from supplication and become disdainful.

Allah (s.w.t.) said:

اِنَّ الَّذِینَ یسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِی سَیدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِینَ

“Indeed those who are disdainful of My worship will enter hell in utter humiliation”.

Best Supplications

Best Supplications

The best of supplications are those in which a person invokes for increase in cognition and inner light, for the purity and cleanliness of inner soul, for the best fate and to seek opportunity for good deeds, to earn rewards, to be adorned with desirable ethics, to perform the Islamic obligations, to seek forgiveness and pardon, and the nearness of Allah Almighty.

Such supplications will certainly be answered and the signs of its acceptance will appear quickly, and with such supplications, a person travels towards Allah and obtains His nearness.

Other supplications will be answered only when they are according to the divine traditions, and on the other hand, when they are as per the welfare of the supplicator.

Many a times we supplicate and in that supplication, we ask Allah to entangle others in afflictions and hardships. Such supplications are certainly not answered and Allah, the Just, the Wise, the Forbearing, is pure from answering these supplications.

Such supplications are a sign of lack of maturity, cognition and patience of the supplicator.

The completest of supplications are those which the holy Quran has narrated from the prophets and believers, and those supplications which are reported from the great Prophet (p.b.u.h.) and his household (peace be upon Him).

These supplications, like the supplication of Kumail, supplication of Arafa, supplication of Abu Hamza, the supplications of Sahifa e Kamila e Sajjadiya, take the supplicator to the highest level of humanity and helps him in ascending towards the upper world.

One of the most valuable aspects of supplication is the nurturing aspect. The topics of supplications narrated from the religious leaders and guides, are all nurturing, teaching, and completing the insight and cognition.

We cannot write about supplications, its effects, its bounties, conditions and etiquettes in this place in a worthwhile manner, and apart from that, it is not possible by someone as aged as me. My respected readers should refer to those great and valuable books that have been penned by the clerics and experts of this subject.

One of the traditions regarding the virtues of supplication is:

"الدعاء مخ العبادۃ"

“Supplication is the brain of worship”

It has arrived in another narration that:

"الدعاء سلاح المؤمن و عمود الدین و نور السماوات و الارض"

“Supplication is the weapon of a believer, the pillar of religion and the light of the heavens and the earth”.

This is a summary of the benefits, effects, graces and virtues of supplication.

Ramadan – The month of supplication (2)
Everyone must supplicate!

Everyone must supplicate!

Mankind mostly turns towards Allah at the times of sufferings and hardships; and says “Ya Allah”, “Ya Rahman”, “Ya Shafi”, “Ya Kafi” and “Ya Razzaq”; but he forgets Allah at the time of luxuries and affluence; the air of pride and arrogance fills his chest and he doesn’t consider himself weak and needful any further, thus disobeying the commands of Allah arrogantly.

With little wealth and respect, health, status and position, power and youthful strength, he becomes so wile that he doesn’t see anyone and in other words, he loses himself, walks arrogantly on earth; and as if the world is at their disposal, he considers others as slaves and valueless, while he feels proud of himself; he looks at the other servants of Allah with eyes of disgrace and deviates from Allah, thus becoming the example of the following verse:

وَإِذَا أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى الْإِنْسَانِ أَعْرَضَ وَنَأَى بِجَانِبِهِ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ فَذُو دُعَاءٍ عَرِیضٍ

“When We bless man, he is disregardful and turns aside; but when an ill befalls him, he makes protracted supplications”.

For this group of people, supplication and the expression of need and demand in the divine threshold, is more compulsory than the entangled and afflicted group. The entangled and afflicted group doesn’t need the teaching of supplication so much because their afflictions itself drive them towards supplication.

But this group possessing wealth and bounties, must be invited towards supplication and they should be asked to continuously invoke Allah and be grateful to Him; so that they become humble and modest, lessen their claims, and do not distance themselves from Allah’s men; and do not contaminated with the dirt of arrogance and rebellion.

Therefore, supplication is a general and comprehensive program. Every person, as per his potential and ability, benefits from it and even the apostles and messengers of religion have profited from it, as they supplicated and invoked Allah more than others.

Ramadan – The month of supplication

“Your Lord has said, ‘Call Me, and I will hear you!’ Indeed those who are disdainful of My worship will enter hell in utter humiliation”.[1]

One of the duties and programs performed by the people who fast in the month of Ramadan is supplication, whispered prayers and seeking the fulfilment of desires from Allah, the Bestower of Desires (Qadhi al Hajat).

Reciting supplication and seeking good from Allah is recommended (Mustahab) at all times; it empowers the soul and is among the causes of happiness of heart, peace of mind and revival of the faculties of thought and spirit.

Dua (supplication) removes sorrows and sadness, serves as a strengthening food for the soul, ends depressions, causes optimism and hope for the future, and protects from the nightmares of despair.

Dua, means to invoke Allah, seek His support and request Him for the fulfilment of desires; human beings naturally benefit from the great blessing and vast divine mercy.

Mankind – how much ever he becomes powerful and strong – turns towards Allah (who is greater than everyone, needless of everyone and solves everyone’s problems) at times of afflictions and difficulties, and seeks refuge in Him, and requests Him for the removal of hardships and afflictions in which he has been entangled. His nature guides him towards Allah and he doesn’t find any resolver other than Allah:

قُلْ أَرَأَیتَكُمْ إِنْ أَتَاكُمْ عَذَابُ اللَّهِ أَوْ أَتَتْكُمُ السَّاعَةُ أَغَیرَ اللَّهِ تَدْعُونَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِینَ۔ بَلْ إِیاهُ تَدْعُونَ

“Say, ‘Tell me, should Allah’s punishment overtake you, or should the Hour overtake you, will you supplicate anyone other than Allah, should you be truthful’?”[2]

          “No, Him you will supplicate”

اگر افتی بدام ابتلایی                      بہ جز او از کہ می جویی رھایی[3]

“If you fell in the trap of affliction, from whom will you seek rescue except Him?”

In the ups and downs of life, and the happenings of time, and in front of the difficult and unbearable circumstances, a man reached such instances where he cannot rely upon anything for himself except supplication, and only supplication can compensate the spiritual weakness and powerlessness.

One of the things towards which every sick and suffering person is inclined is supplication.

Every sick, afflicted and depressed man likes to have a friend with whom he can share all his sorrows and make him aware of his depressions and describe his sufferings for him, and tell him all that has happened to him one by one; in short, he seeks a problem solver.

The science of psychology identifies this feeling as one of the methods of diminishing the sorrows and decreasing the disturbances, worries and spiritual sorrows.

If a person conceals his sorrows inside his heart and doesn’t reveal it before anyone or doesn’t find anyone with whom he can share his heart’s sorrow as it is, it will increase the fire of disturbance and the thoughts of depression much further. Thus he will find this vast and extensive world narrow and dark for himself.

One of the benefits of supplication for a believer is that he can share his secrets, sorrows, sufferings and pains with his Merciful and all-Hearing Lord, and he can describe his entanglements without any concealment; and he seeks solution from Him and knows that Allah is nearer to him than anyone else; He listens to his moaning and invocations and responds to it.

A faithful servant realizes after the supplication that his inner pains have lightened, and the weight of his sorrows and spiritual pressures have diminished.

Indeed if supplication wouldn’t have been there, and if Allah’s servants wouldn’t have chosen the path of supplication, and if they were helpless in not being able to share the secrets and sufferings of his heart, how unbearable and bitter his life would have become, and his spiritual entanglements would trouble them.

We must be grateful to Allah in exchange of the existence of a blessing in the form of supplication, and we should honor and respect this blessing.

It has arrived in the supplication of Abu Hamza Thumali:

"الحمد للہ الذی ادعوہ فیجیبنی و ان کنت بطیئا حین یدعونی"

“All praise is for Allah whom I call upon with my needs then He answers me even though I was slow when He calls upon me”.

And in that same supplication, we recite:

"الحمدُ للہ الذی اسئله فیعطینی و ان کنت بخیلا حین یستقرضنی"

“All praise is for Allah whom I supplicate and He grants me (what I plead for) even though I was stingy when He sought a loan from me.”

And on another instance from this beautiful supplication, we recite:

"الحمد للہ الذی انادیه کلما شئت لحاجتی و اخلو به حیث شئت لسری بغیر شفیع فیقضی لی حاجتی"

“All praise is for Allah whom I call upon with my need whatever I wish and I entrust Him with my secrets without an intercessor and He grants me my wishes”

"الحمد للہ الذی ادعوہ و لا ادعو غیرہ و لو دعوت غیرہ لم یستجب لی دعایی"

“All Praise is for Allah whom I do not plead to anyone but Him for if I pleaded to others, they would not grant me”.

Supplication raises ones aspirations, strengthens his will and decisions, and makes human beings prepared and insured against the great happenings and sorrows.

His holiness, the Master of martyrs, Imam Husain (peace be upon Him) – in the beginning of the day of Ashura – wherein it was enough that he was to be welcomed by all those afflictions and tragedies, and those extreme sufferings, in order to defeat the great stouts of the world and rub their faces on the surface of humility and surrender – faced towards the court of Allah and invoked Him with these meaningful sentences and asked His approval and power, and in that battlefield of difficulties and hardships, he did not deviate from the right path at all, and did not move his eye from his motive and goal even for a moment.

"O Lord! I depend on you in every affliction and am hopeful of Your blessing in every hardship. In every difficulty with which I am faced, You are my only remedy and resort.

There have been many embarrassments which weakened my heart and no remedy for it was available. The friends did not assist me and the enemies rejoiced at my misfortune. However, when I ceased to seek assistance from everyone except You and sought the remedy only from You, You provided me solace and relief and removed the difficulty. Every blessing and goodness reaches us from You and everything should be sought from You only".

Study the soulful sentences of this supplication carefully to comprehend the weapon with which Imam Husain (peace be upon Him) was armed; a weapon against which if all the world, with its troops and army joins hands with the army of Kufa, it cannot defeat the truth and virtuousness of Imam Husain (peace be upon Him), and it cannot shake his courage, steadfastness and bravery, and it cannot make his focus deviate from his actual motive and goal towards any other place or point.

Indeed, Allah is the supporter and the ultimate motive of Imam Husain (peace be upon Him), with whose help he could come respectfully and gloriously out of that battlefield filled with calamities, without getting humiliated, disgraced and surrendered by the infidels; and it assisted him to support the religion of Allah by gifting his life and the lives of his sons and companions.

Supplication is the medium of purifying ones inner soul and depicted the intelligence of the supplicator regarding his need and necessity towards Allah, and it causes the inculcation of virtues like humility, modesty, humbleness, and helps in refraining from arrogance and pride.

Remembering Ayatullah Boroujardi (r.a.)

On one of the days, as per my routine, I got the opportunity of visiting my teacher, the grand Ayatullah Boroujardi (r.a.), while I was benefitting from that great source of knowledge, his excellency handed over a letter to me which reached him on that day itself. I took the letter and studied it. I will write down what I remember from that letter briefly:[1]

A Christian man, Lebanese author and professor, George Jordac, in his letter addressing Ayatullah Boroujardi, wrote: I have studied the life history of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) deeply and have understood this truth that all the principles which are accepted and agreed upon by the nations and countries in our civilized world today, and are recognized as the basis of human progress and life, are derived from the life, commands, methods and behavior of Imam (peace be upon Him), and the Islamic clerics have not explained and illustrated these principles they way it should have been.

The western clerics have also concealed this point; because they did not wish to accept that a personality from the east, becomes the manifestation and depicter of all these principles. And I did not find it appropriate that such a personality exists in the east and his status, position and worth remains unknown. Therefore, I have written this book, and because I am a Christian, no one can accuse me of being intolerant.

He had also written that I find you the most appropriate person to whom I should gift this book. Hence, I am sending you this gift and after studying it, you will agree that:

“I have respected the boundaries of justice in my judgment regarding Imam (peace be upon Him)”.[2]

My departed teacher was waiting for the book as it hadn’t reached him yet. I said to him that if Allah wills, the book will reach him soon; but this letter itself is an important certificate due to the points and confirmations which are written it.

After sometime, the book arrived. The name of the book was “Al Imam Ali – Sautul Adalatil Insaniyah” (Imam Ali – the voice of human justice). It was published in a single volume and lately, it has been reprinted in several volumes. His excellence, Ayatullah Boroujardi, studied the book after some time and commanded me to study it from the beginning till the end, and asked me to note down any mistake I find in the book. Abiding by the command of my teacher, I studied the entire book and noted down those instances and brought it back for my teacher.

Among the valuable points that I read in that book, was the analysis of the letter written to Malik e Ashtar and its comparison with the declaration of human rights.[3] This Christian scholar wrote down all the clauses of the declaration of human rights and against each clause, he placed a sentence from this letter, and said: this is the declaration of human rights, and this is the letter addressed by Imam to Malik al – Ashtar. If we observe both of them, we will find that in all the clauses, the sentences from the letter are more complete and clear; with the following differences:

  1. Declaration of human rights have been written in an age when the world has, as they say, witnessed immense progress and after a series of completion, it can be seen in its present form; but Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) has written down these writes thirteen centuries ago, when these rights were neither discussed and nor considered.
  2.  Regarding the sections of the constitution and its clauses and words and texts, the clerics of rights and scholars of different countries have given their opinions and made analysis, and have presented it before the common thoughts in the newspapers, and have written it with mutual partnership; but Imam Ali (peace be upon Him,) wrote this letter personally, without the consent of anyone else, when Malik al – Ashtar was appointed as the governor of Egypt.
  3. While these men wrote the declaration of human rights, to whichever extent possible, they imposed this favour and pride over the weak, colonized and deprived nations; while Imam did not impose favour upon anyone from the humanity while announcing these rights, and considered it as his obligation and duty.
  4. Those who presented the declaration of human rights before the world, and introduced themselves as the founders (falsely), did not pay respect to this declaration; and at a time when their personal benefits are at stake, they place their feet over the sections and do not act upon it; but Imam (peace be upon Him), as per the evidence of history, was ahead of everyone in acting upon this treaty, and never did he oppose any of its clauses.

Whatever we wish to write regarding the personality of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him), it will never reach its end. Although thousands of books have been written on the life of his holiness, but the passage of time makes his greatness and value more and more evident day by day; and whoever began to study the life history and virtues of his holiness, will witness himself in front of such fresh attributes that he will assume that it has remained unrevealed for others.

On one of the days, as per my routine, I got the opportunity of visiting my teacher, the grand Ayatullah Boroujardi (r.a.), while I was benefitting from that great source of knowledge, his excellency handed over a letter to me which reached him on that day itself. I took the letter and studied it. I will write down what I remember from that letter briefly.

[1] Because at present, that letter is not available with me and several years have passed since I studied it, what I am writing is the summary of the points mentioned in the letter.

[2] This statement is the exact word of Goerge Jordac.

[3] From that time till today, I did not get an opportunity to study that book again, and even now that I am writing down this section, this book is not available with me. Therefore, that which I have written is presented in the form of an excerpt from that book. Respected readers can refer to the original text or the translation of the book for further study.

The Certificate of pride for humanity and the liveliest program of statesmanship

The Certificate of pride for humanity and the liveliest program of statesmanship

One of the most important certificates of pride for the Islamic society, specially the Shias, is the letter of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) to Malik al – Ashtar,[1] which is considered as one of the most authentic declarations of human rights even after about 1400 years.

The sentences and expressions of this letter, is valuable, attractive and astonishing in all different sections of statesmanship and attention towards the rights of society, and the protection of all the different aspects.

This letter, both in the past and at present, is studied and analyzed by the scholars and great sages, and several explanations have been written on it, one among which is the explanation of Tawfeeq al – Fakeeki by the name “Ar – Ra’yi war Ra’iyyah”.

Inappropriate praise and eulogy

Inappropriate praise and eulogy

One of the companions spoke immensely praising and adulating Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) but Imam (peace be upon Him) did not accept his words and reminded him and others that his governmental program does not include those programs which have put Islam to death; and that he is upset due to these praises and gratifications, and he doesn’t like to hear these eulogies from anyone; because Almighty Allah is worthier than anyone else for these praises, gratitude and glorifications.

Indeed, such face to face admirations and praising, in the presence of the statesmen and the rulers, brings back the eras of Caesars and Cyrus, which Islam has left behind.

Among them, his holiness (peace be upon Him) said: do not address me in the manner which the tyrants and oppressors are addressed; and do not hesitate before me like you hesitate in front of the rulers (express your wishes with simple words and expressions), and do not use flattery; do not assume that I will become upset upon hearing the truth. Until he said:

" Verily, I and all of you are the servants and slaves of a Lord except whom there isn’t any Lord”[1]

In our opinion, all the relationships between the government and the society are based on the understanding of this sentence, that a ruler rightly comprehends that in servitude, he is by no means superior to his people, and all are the servants and slaves of the Lord of the world. This is where all the unwanted expectations vanish; all the arrogances, selfishness, tyranny and pride comes to an end; all the formalities are removed and the presence of the ruler, become the role model of humility, modesty and etiquettes for his people. If the people also understand this sublime meaning, their existence will be filled with self – respect and dignity, and they will refrain from flattery and unnecessary praising, and from giving titles and medals; consequently, the most sublime relationship between the society and the government will be maintained.

[1] As this sermon comprises of extremely valuable and precious meanings, it is desirable that extreme attention and focus of the cognizant people should be paid on it; sections of this sermon are in Nahjul Balagha, and the entire text it mentioned in Raudatul Kafi. Statesmanship of Imam Ali

Statesmanship of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him)

The way of governance and statesmanship in Islam, and the relationship between the government and the society, is on the basis of equality, justice, respect, consideration of everyone’s rights, attention towards freedom of individuals, lovable cooperation and eradication of unnecessary formalities.

In Islam, such an individual has to be the ruler whose authority is much more and much serious than others. The ruler performs his duties like a kind brother and trustworthy servant, and does not regard the rule as a medium of fulfilling his animalistic desires, arrogances and pride. The ruler cannot prefer himself or his relatives over others or live a lavish life; or make Caesars or Cyrus his ideal in life; or he cannot withdraw more than his right from the “House of wealth”, and cannot distance himself from the people with these actions. The ruler must be so close to the people that whoever, at whichever post or rank, wishes to attend his meeting or sit along with him, should not be humiliated by others.

The governance in Islamic society must be a bright source of Islamic justice and it must be clean and pure from all sorts of oppression and self – interests.

The rule of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) depicted all these principles and was the brightest manifestation of the governance by all the human meanings, and it stood as the introducer of the true spirit of Islamic justice and equality. Ali (peace be upon Him) was the only one who was aware of the Islamic teachings and motives after the Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny). He was the mirror which displayed the entire system of Islam, the Islamic justice and all the Islamic programs. Therefore, his rule was also the depicter of Islamic concepts in the government and politics and social departments and honor of the principles of freedom and equality. He was the statesman who used to meet his demands by himself.

Whenever Imam (peace be upon Him) went to the Bazar and purchased anything, he used to carry it himself back to his house. At times, when the Muslim “house of wealth” was under his authority, he used to keep his sword for sale.

His holiness always accompanied the weak and helpless people and was always sympathetic towards them; he personally looked after the solution of their actions, complaints and oppressions. He ate bread made of barley and refrained from eating delicious dishes, and always said:

“Cure your soul with contention, if not, it will request you for more than what it is sufficient for it”. [1]

Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) used to stitch patches to his clothes and wear patchy dresses, and said:

“Such dresses make them submissive to Allah and kind – hearted towards others and the faithful Muslims can conveniently follow the example”.[2]

When Imam Ali, marching the head of his army towards Syria, reached Ambar, the landlords of the place came out to meet him in zeal of their love, faithfulness and respect, no sooner had they seen Imam Ali they got down from their horses and started running in front of him. Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) asked the reason of their strange actions. They replied that it was their custom to show their love and respect for their rulers (statesmen) in that way. Imam Ali replied: “By Allah, by your action you do no good whatsoever to your rulers but you tire yourself and put yourself in toils in this world and in trouble in the next”.[3]

When one of the people, began to walk with him while Amir al – Momineen was on horseback, so Amir al – Momineen, peace be upon him, said to him: “Get back because the walking of a man like you with one like me is mischief for the ruler and disgrace for the believer.”[4]

It means that such behaviour and honour, makes the rulers and statesmen proud and it encourages them to become arrogant and haughty, while it destroys the dignity, glory and self – respect of a believer.

Martyrdom of Amir al – Momineen (2)
The Tradition of the two Sheikhs has no value

The Tradition of the two Sheikhs has no value

The explicit, free and righteous men always pertain to the indemnity of seeking freedom, truth and reality, and they do not deviate from the right path, and for the sake of rightness and truth, they bear heavy burdens.

Many a times, these people do not pay heed to the opportunities and sensitive situations, and great positions and posts which are offered to them, only for the sake of refraining from falsehood, from cheating people, and for not deviating from the pious political path or indulging in breaking promises.

Islam is the religion of truth, justice and righteousness. As it has arrived in the holy Quran:

“O you who have faith! Be maintainers of justice and witnesses for the sake of Allah, even if it should be against yourselves or [your] parents and near relatives”.[1]

Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) has also said:

“The sign of faith is to choose truth, while it will harm you, over a lie, which will benefit you”.[2]

One of the main causes of the apparent dominance of the wrong people over the right people is that they pertain to all sorts of deceits; they misguide people; they tell lies; they make false promises; they buy people by giving bribes and positions; they violate all the rights; they make the fraud, treacherous and tyrant men their agents and commit all the indecent and shameful actions. They do all these deeds only for defeating their opponents and achieving their motives.

These acts are legitimate according to their logic, because their motive is to rule, govern and dominate their enemies. But the righteous people, who are men of freedom and truth, refrain from making use of these satanic acts and for them, the result which is achieved by implying deceit, cheatings and trickeries, is not success, rather, it is the actual defeat.

If the righteous people apparently get defeated, the cause of their defeat is neither due to their weak methods and bad politics, and nor due to the powerful method and good politics of the wrong people. Instead, it is related to the conditions of the surrounding, the opportunities, social atmosphere and situations, and the intellectual growth and upbringing of the society.

In a society which is filled with ignorant people and men who lack intellectual growth, the wrong people can lay their traps for the innocent and unaware people with their cunningness, deceits, schemes and hypocrisies.

But the righteous people, for achieving success, will never make use of deceits and trickeries and lies, and they will never make the people ignorant and misguided, they will not speak against the truth because their motive is to lay the foundation of the true government and to nurture people upon the principles of truth.

It is a government whose leader says:

“If they gift me the seven dominions of the world with what lies under their heavens so that I may disobey Allah by taking away a grain of barley from the mouth of an ant, I will never do it.”[3]

In the history of Islam, one of the manifestations of these two methods, was the opportunity and situation which arrived for two renowned individuals, i.e. Ali (peace be upon Him) and Othman. One of them gave up his confirmed right due to his unacceptance of innovation and abstinence of leniency, and the other officially accepted that innovation and the oath which he didn’t fulfill, and forcibly became the ruler of people.

As we know, when Umar realized that the attack of Abu Lulu will turn out to be fatal for him, he brought a fresh innovation and accepted an unprecedented method upon which neither his reign, nor the reign of his predecessor, Abu Bakr, had been established.

As we know the detail, Abu Bakr ascended the position in the name of election and consensus (which did not occur)! But on his death bed, he himself refrained from the election of nation and consensus, by appointing Umar for the caliphate. At the time of his death, Umar came with another innovation, which was that he handed over the issue of selecting the caliph to a six member council and deprived the entire nation from casting their vote.

It is evident that the reason behind all the three methods was to put aside the caliph who has been appointed and confirmed by the holy Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny).

They firstly raised the issue of allegiance and nation – wide consensus; because on this basis, it was definite that if the case was consulted in the presence of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) and he got involved in the matter, they could never appoint Abu Bakr so quickly. With the presence of Ali (peace be upon Him) and the guidance of his holiness, Abu Bakr could never be appointed. Therefore, they concluded the issue in the absence of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) and all the other sons of Hashim, and as Abu Bakr already knew that Umar would never be selected by the consensus of the nation, and Ali (peace be upon Him) would be appointed, he deprived the entire nation of its right to elect and the consensus based on which he himself was selected; and he personally allotted Umar as his successor.

At the time of his death, Umar also knew that if the decision regarding the caliphate is handed over to the people, they would definitely elect Imam Ali (peace be upon Him), therefore he appointed a six member council in order to put aside Ali (peace be upon Him) in the council. With this act, he stabbed Islam and the Islamic motives in a manner that wasn’t compensable. It was such that Sayyid Qutub expressed his sadness that an eligible, appropriate and ideal leader like Ali (peace be upon Him) was forced to sit at home and an incapable, weak and personality – less person like Othman became the leader of the Muslims.

The move of Umar and the commands issued by him, for various reasons, was an illegitimate act and a crime whose weak points and illegalities are not intended to be mentioned here.

In this section, we would like to explain a corner of the six member council and the manifestation of its two contradicting motives and methods.

Umar placed the responsibilities of the council in the hands of Abdur Rahman bin Awf, who was the husband of Othman’s sister; because he commanded Abu Talha al – Ansari: if five members reach an agreement and one member disagrees, strike off the neck of that one member; if four members reach an agreement and two members disagree, strike off the head of those two members; and if three members agree on a decision and three others agree on another decision, accept the decision of those three members among whom Abdur Rahman bin Awf exists; and if the other three members did not give up their decision, strike off their heads! (It is extremely astonishing).

In this council, it was known that four or five members out of the six members – whose pasts with Ali (peace be upon Him) was known to Umar very well –  will never vote for his holiness; because Talha had hostility against Ali (peace be upon Him), and Abdur Rahman bin Awf, apart from being his holiness’s enemy, was also the husband of Othman’s sister.

Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, apart from being deviant from Imam Ali (peace be upon Him), belonged to the tribe of Abdur Rahman bin Awf and was under the influence of his opinion.

At last, these six members were constituted in such a way that if three members voted in favour of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him), as Abdur Rahman bin Awf wouldn’t be one of them, their vote would be rendered invalid.

This council was formed in this sequence and format, and with this strange and astonishing program, along with a specific intention. Talha voted for Othman and Zubair voted for Ali (peace be upon Him), and Sa’d e Waqqas voted for Abdur Rahman bin Awf. In this manner, three men were set aside and three others remained, Ali (peace be upon Him), Abdur Rahman and Othman, which made the secret plot of Umar effective.

Nevertheless, as Abdur Rahman was cautious about his respect and dignity, and he knew that if without any reason and rational proof, he appoints an incapable, knowledge – less and inefficient person from the Umayyad dynasty – which was always an anti – Islamic and anti – Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) tribe – over someone like Ali (peace be upon Him) who was the brother, the successor and the cousin of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny), and the only inheritor of the knowledge of his holiness, the victor of all the battles and the holder of all those virtues and merits; then he would be targeted with people’s accusations, disgraces and curses, and would have initiated the common sentiments against himself, and everyone would’ve understood that in this selection, apart from observing kinship, no other welfare of Islam and Muslims has been considered, and his treachery would become evident. Eventually, for attaining the approval of the tribes of ‘Taym’ and ‘Adi’, as well as the supporters of Abu Bakr and Umar, he laid hands on an astonishing deceit and found an excuse to put Ali (peace be upon Him) aside.

Abdur Rahman and his group knew that Ali (peace be upon Him) is a man of truth and apart from the slogan of truth, nothing else can be uttered from his tongue, and that he will not accept a path which is not brought by the religion of Islam, and he would not approve of any innovation; he is one who wants Islam to remain pure and clean. Therefore, they designed a scheme and laid a condition for the allegiance of Abdur Rahman, which was not acceptable for Ali (peace be upon Him) by any means.

Apart from the conditions of acting upon the Book of Allah and the tradition of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny), they kept the condition of acting upon the tradition of Abu Bakr and Umar as well. This was the very condition which was not acceptable for Imam Ali (peace be upon Him); because firstly, obeying the Book of Allah and acting upon the tradition of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) was sufficient and it had no such deficiency which would be completed with the traditions of these two individuals.

Secondly, legalizing the traditions of these two individuals in the Islamic affairs and Sharia, was an innovation and discretion in the sanctity of religion and sources of rules.

Thirdly, how has the tradition of these two people become reliable that someone like Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) is obligated to follow them.

Fourthly, in the tradition of these two individuals, such methods existed which were evidently anti – Islamic, making it impossible to regard their methods proof and reason for others.

Fifthly, while in the tradition of these two, there are instances which contradict each other, how could both these traditions be authentic and reliable for the successors?

Sixthly, didn’t Umar and his group stop Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) from writing his will after which the nation would never be misguided (as mentioned in the most authentic Sunni books) and misbehaved in front of the holy position of prophet hood such that writing it down will embarrass the pen, and their excuse was Hasbuna Kitaballah (Allah’s book is sufficient for us)[4]. Then today, how is it such that both the book of Allah and the tradition of His Messenger become insufficient and they add on the traditions of the two Sheikhs?

Wouldn’t every just person give evidence that these men have cheated Islam and Muslims, and gave importance to their filthy and supremacist motives over the sublime welfare of Islam?

Indeed, accepting this condition and hundreds of such illegal and illegitimate conditions is easy for men like Othman; because there isn’t anything stopping them; they will accept it today and tomorrow, after dominating the conditions, they will ignore each one of them!

At the end, in this way, this political game and deceit of these misleading and deceitful men, and this story of treachery and this black page of history reach its end. Abdur Rahman addressed Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) and said: I will pledge allegiance with you for the book of Allah, the tradition of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) and the tradition of the two Sheikhs – Abu Bakr and Umar.

Ali (peace be upon Him) said: “Instead, for the book of Allah, the tradition of Allah’s Messenger and my own exegesis”. Abdur Rahman turned towards Othman and gave the same suggestion; and Othman accepted it. Abdur Rahman turned again towards Ali (peace be upon Him) and repeated his suggestion and condition of acting upon the traditions of the two Sheikhs. Ali (peace be upon Him) rejected the proposal and gave the same response. He again turned towards Othman and gave the same proposal and Othman accepted it without any condition. He turned towards Imam (peace be upon Him) for the third time and mentioned the condition of allegiance. Ali (peace be upon Him) did not change his first response.

Then Abdur Rahman pledged allegiance with Othman and said: “As salaamo alaika ya Ameeral Momineen”.[5] (Peace be upon you O commander of the faithful)

Abdur Rahman knew very well that if this proposal is repeated even for a thousand times, Ali (peace be upon Him) will not accept it and that he will never approve of this immense innovation which leads to discretion in the basis and source of the actual principles of Islamic prophet hood. But for Othman, there will be no objection in the acceptance of this proposal, because he neither restricted himself for the protection of the principles and the roots of Islamic teachings, nor will he fulfill the promises which he shall make. Therefore, he signed on this innovation and not just distanced himself from acting upon Allah’s Book and Prophet’s tradition, but moreover, he did not pay attention to the method of Abu Bakr and Umar as well. However, in this position and incident, it became very obvious and clear for everyone that to what extent Ali (peace be upon Him) is bounded by the protection of Islamic roots and that he will never forsake these principles in order to obtain the official positions and ranks.[6]

Meanwhile, with this decision, Imam Ali (peace be upon Him) officially and openly rejected the reliability of the tradition of Abu Bakr and Umar, though at the stake of abstaining caliphate and rule, and he protected Islam from the limitations of personal thoughts and desires.

Martyrdom of Amir al – Momineen (peace be upon Him)

One of the great incidents of the month of Ramadan, which changed the path of Islamic history, was the martyrdom of the leader of the pious, Imam Ali (peace be upon Him).

With the martyrdom of his holiness (peace be upon Him), Islam lost its one and only compassionate and true supporter, and Muslims became deprived of the grace of a beloved leader, a just ruler, a knowledgeable Imam, a kind and benevolent guide, and the waves of afflictions and conspiracies surrounded them from every direction.

The sword of Ibn e Muljim Muradi (l.a.) struck the body of Islam, justice, freedom and virtue, and it wounded the structure of all the sublime motives of humanity.

On the occasion of this extremely unbearable incident and life – taking tragedy, and for the awareness of the precious and lifesaving Islamic teachings and the concepts of Shias, and for the additional understanding of this great incident, we would adorn this book by mentioning some of the manifestations of the great and unparalleled personality of Imam Ali (peace be upon Him), while confessing our incapability and lack of efficiency in this regard.

Successor and Vicegerent of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny)

In the beginning of Prophet’s prophet hood, people had not yet accepted the new religion as a serious and eminent issue, when they used to consider the implication of such promises to be impossible, and did not have faith in the prophet hood of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny).

At that time, some of the relatives of his holiness stood in his opposition and a few others expressed fear from that situation; because they witnessed that with hands empty from worldly riches and without the support of friends, clique, troops and army, Mohammad (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) stood against the idols and Gods of the tribes and chiefs, the powerful and the rich, the colonists and the tyrants, the magicians, the usurers and the oppressors; and has risen against the corrupt conditions and habits, and invites everyone towards forsaking these methods, and considers his success as a definite issue.

Probably, most of them assumed that certainly Mohammad’s voice will be silenced and the slogans of “Allah – o – Akbar” and “La Ilaha illallah” will not win the hearts of the majority of idol worshippers. They were afraid of Mohammad’s fate and his weak position among the other tribes.

They used to say: How will the mere utterance of “La ilaha illallah” create a sense of humility among the Arabs and the non – Arabs and help in attaining the treasures of Caesars and Cyrus? And how will these hypocrisies, conflicts and rifts, turn into friendship, unity and monotheism; and how will the new and sublime Islamic system, Law and divine governance, replace the anarchies, lawlessness and governance of force and autocracy?

They used to witness Mohammad (peace be upon Him) without any riches, army or troops, but having the intention of giving everything to the people, like: freedom, self – respect, independence, high moral values, brotherhood and equality. He says: Say the word of “Tawheed” (monotheism), renounce infidelity and forsake the worship of idols, you will become the owner of everything; leadership, supremacy, honour, dignity, human rights, justice etc. will become your share.

They knew for a fact that the word of “Tawheed” is the source of all the good and noble deeds, but they were unaware of the fruits of this belief. The slogan of “Tawheed” is the slogan of freedom, justice, equality, dignity and virtue; it is a slogan which has maintained brotherhood among the people and has founded the best form of governance, against which democracy appears to be worthless, and it eradicates all the values of caste and creed, wealth and society, and makes everyone equal and parallel.

They did not know that this slogan is heavier than the earth and heavens, and no other slogan can match its level, and it will tear off all the veils.

A large group of people saw this invitation as the one contradicting their values and positions, their investments and esteemed habits, and opposing the method with which they had habituated. They couldn’t raise their hands from personal benefits and stand in line with all the other servants of Allah.

They could not (i.e. they did not wish to) give up their arrogance and pride and stand with their subordinates.

Due to such reasons and similar causes, they fought against the progress of the religion of “Tawheed” (monotheism) from the very beginning; they stood as obstacles in the path of Mohammad (peace be upon Him), troubled him and mocked his ways.

Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) stood firmly against such people, and also against all the orchestrated groups, all the sufferings and afflictions; and he used to strive hard and put all his effort for the purpose of guiding the society and eradicating idol – worship in the shortest possible time, thus delivering mankind.

While Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) wasn’t in need of anyone’s support for his steadfastness in the matter of his divine invitation, but for the progress of his motives, he required the support of others; because his prophet hood was for the people. Therefore, Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) could not possibly ignore the people and give no regard to their support. He was in need of a supporter, a successor, and someone who shared his thought, understood the motives of his prophet hood and loved it, and one who could sacrifice his life and show selflessness for this path; one who was better than all the men of the Arabian peninsula and better than all the people of the world.

Naturally, except Imam Ali (peace be upon Him), no one else possessed these qualities. It is an inference which can be reached by fairly studying the Islamic history and the history of all the Islamic personalities and companions.

Ali (peace be upon Him) is someone who was put to sleep since his childhood by the holy Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) himself with his soulful and heavenly voice; he was nurtured and brought up by the Prophet (peace be upon Him); he is the one who accompanied Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) in the cave of Hira, where the Prophet secluded for worship of Allah and meditation. Ali (peace be upon Him) is the one whom Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) taught all his knowledge so that it can be a transcript of the original source.

He was the one who was monotheist since his birth and who died as a monotheist; the one who never held the impurity of idol – worship. One can never have a past like him in Islam; he never separated himself from the Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny), his religion and his path, and offered prayer with the Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) seven years prior to others.[1] Thus, it has arrived in a tradition that: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) said: “Angels recited Salawaat on me and Ali for seven years; because apart from him, not a single person used to offer prayer in my company.”[2]

It has been narrated from Afeef al – Kindi that he said:

‘I was a merchant and I came to Mecca in the season of Hajj (pilgrimage) where I resided in the house of Abbas bin Abdul Mut’talib. When I and Abbas were together, we witnessed that a man arrived and faced the Kabah, then a boy arrived and stood towards his right side, then a lady arrived and stood behind him, they bowed and prostrated; then lifted their head.

I said to Abbas:  Is this a big issue?

Abbas also said: It is a great incident.

This is Mohammad, my nephew; he says: “Allah has chosen him for prophet hood and that the treasures of Caesar and Cyrus will reveal for those who pledge allegiance on his hand and believe in him”; and this boy is my nephew, Ali bin Abi Talib. And this lady, his (Mohammad’s) wife, is Khadija binte Khuwaylad.

A similar incident has been reported from Abdullah bin Mas’ood also, at the end of which, he narrates from Abbas that he said: on the surface of earth, there is no one except these three who worship the God of this religion.[3]

From the very beginning of Prophet hood, Ali (peace be upon Him) was introduced as the caliph, successor, heir and minister of Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny).

The holy Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) was commanded to invite his close relatives and warn them:

وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِیرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِینَ [4]

“Warn the nearest of your kinsfolk”

According to numerous authentic traditions, Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) invited the progeny of Hashim, which comprised of forty people, and asked Ali (peace be upon Him) to prepare food, which wasn’t sufficient for more than one person.

All the forty people ate from that food and became full, and he made all of them drink from a milk vessel which was not for more than one person until they were full; and before Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) could utter anything, Abu Lahab made all the relatives disperse.

He invited them again on the next day. When they ate the food and drank milk, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) said to them:

“O sons of Abdul Mut’talib! By Allah, I don’t know of any person who would have brought a greater thing for his tribe than what I have brought for you. I have brought the best of this world and the hereafter for you; Allah has commanded me to invite you towards Him. Thus, who among you will believe in me, and support me in the affair of Prophet hood, and become my brother, successor, minister and caliph from my own after me?”

And as per some traditions, he repeated the same thrice and all the three times, no one except Ali (peace be upon Him) responded to his call.

Prophet (peace be upon Him and His Progeny) said:

“Indeed he (Ali peace be upon Him) is my brother, successor, minister and my caliph among you; listen to his word and obey him”.[5]

That group of men stood up and while they were laughing, said to Abu Talib: He commanded you to obey your son.[6] In this way, the successorship and caliphate of Ali (peace be upon Him) was announced for everyone. And even after that case, on several incidences, this selection was openly declared, until the day of Ghadeer e Khum, in the year of the Farewell Hajj, after the revelation of the following verse:

“O Apostle! Communicate that which has been sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not, you will not have communicated His message, and Allah shall protect you from the people.”[7]

In that general gathering also, as per the emphasized command of Allah, the issue of caliphate and successorship was officially announced and Amir al – Momineen (peace be upon Him) was selected and appointed for this post.[8]
